Jehlarova and Timmer Earn Preseason All-Conference Nods; Cougs Tabbed Sixth in Pac-12 Coaches' Poll

Aug 8, 2022

PULLMAN - Seniors Magda Jehlarova and Pia Timmer were each named to the Pac-12 Preseason All-Conference team while the Washington State women's volleyball team was voted to finish sixth in the 2022 Pac-12 Preseason Coaches' Poll as announced by the league office Monday.  The Pac-12 preseason volleyball poll is voted on by the league's 12 head coaches. Coaches are not permitted to vote for their team.

Jehlarova, a two-time AVCA All-American and three-time All-Pac-12 honoree, begins the season ranked fourth all-time in WSU history in solo blocks (85) and fifth in total blocks (424).  The middle blocker from Prerov, Czech Republic, has become one of the premier middles in the nation as a two-way threat after finishing 2021 with a career-best 2.4 k/s and .353 hitting percentage.  She also finished last season second in the nation in blocks (168) and fourth in blocks per set (1.45).

Senior outside Pia Timmer, a native of Emlichheim, Germany, earned her first AVCA All-American selection in 2021 after leading the Cougs offensively with 3.79 k/set and 4.38 pts/set en route to honorable mention All-American honors.  The two-time first-team All-Pac-12 selection had 12 matches with 15 or more kills last season including a career-high 31 over rival Washington (9/26).

After finishing in a tie for fourth in the final conference standings of 2021 at 13-7 in the Pac-12, WSU qualified for its sixth-consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament where it defeated Northern Colorado in the opening round.  The only team in the conference to finish in the top-five each of the past four years, WSU has seen remarkable consistency in recent years under Head Coach Jen Greeny who was named Pac-12 Co-Coach of the Year in 2021.

Washington earned 8-of-12 first-place votes to finish as the preseason favorites to defend its Pac-12 title while Stanford picked up a pair of first-place votes and finished at No. 2 in the '22 preseason poll.  UCLA and Oregon split the two remaining first-place votes and were tabbed third and fourth, respectively, by the league's coaches while USC narrowly edged out the Cougars in voting to round out the top five.

Washington State will open its 2022 schedule with the BYU Invitational on August 26-27 at the Smith Fieldhosue in Provo, Utah.  The Cougars will play three non-conference matches in Provo beginning with its season-opener on Fri., Aug. 26, at 9 a.m. (PST).
