Everything you need to know about the Pac-12's women's volleyball teams for 2022

Pac-12 women's volleyball season returns Friday when the 2022 season begins, what hopes to be another successful campaign for the Conference.

Half the league reached the NCAA Tournament last season and half is ranked in the AVCA preseason coaches poll entering this season.

Here is a rundown of each squad in the order in which they were ranked in the preseason coaches poll.

No. 8 Washington Huskies

  • 2021 in review: The Huskies went 26-5 overall and 17-3 in the Pac-12 to win their second straight conference championship. They earned the No. 15 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament and beat Brown and Hawaii in the first two rounds before falling to No. 2 Texas in five sets in the Sweet Sixteen.
  • Ranked non-conference matches: vs. No. 17 Illinois (Sept. 4)
  • 1 player to knowSenior outside hitter Claire Hoffman is back after leading Washington in kills (405) and aces (42) last season. She is one of three All-Americans the Huskies are returning, the others being middle blocker Marin Grote and two-time Pac-12 Setter of the Year Ella May Powell.
  • 1 key stat: The Huskies led the Pac-12 in hitting percentage (.425) last season and return 70.1% of their points.
  • 1 key fact: UW has had 20 straight 20+ win seasons, reaching the NCAA Tournament every year during that span. 

No. 14 Stanford Cardinal

  • 2021 in review: The Cardinal went 19-11 overall and 13-7 in the Pac-12, tied with Oregon and Washington State for fourth place. Stanford topped Iowa State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before losing to No. 12 Minnesota in the second round. It was the Cardinal's 40th trip to the NCAA Tournament.
  • Ranked non-conference matches: at No. 15 Florida (Aug. 30), vs. No. 2 Texas (Sept. 4), vs. No. 20 Penn State (Sept. 9), at No. 5 Minnesota (Sept. 10), at No. 1 Nebraska (Sept. 13), vs. No. 4 Louisville (Sept. 17).
  • 1 player to knowRedshirt junior outside hitter Caitie Baird returns after leading the Cardinal with 479 kills last season, the third-most in the Pac-12 and 25th-most in the NCAA. Star setter and reigning Pac-12 Freshman of the Year Kami Miner will surely provide her with plenty of assists.
  • 1 key stat: The Cardinal has plenty of proven hitters outside of Baird, returning four of its top five point scorers from 2021.
  • 1 key fact: Stanford has won more NCAA titles (9), more NCAA Tournament matches (132), has more Final Four appearances (23) and been in the National Championship match (17) more times than any other program in the country.

No. 12 UCLA Bruins

  • 2021 in review: The Bruins went 25-6 overall and 16-4 in the Pac-12, good for second place in the conference. They earned the No. 13 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament and beat Fairfield and UCF in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament before losing on the road to No. 14 Wisconsin in the Sweet Sixteen.
  • Ranked non-conference matches: at No. 25 San Diego (Sept. 16)
  • 1 player to knowMiddle blocker Lauren Forte transferred in from Florida, where she was an AVCA Third Team All-American in two seasons at Florida. Prior to that she was at Cal, where she was an All-Pac-12 player in 2019.
  • 1 key stat: UCLA only returns 50.6% of its scoring, partly because of the graduation of Mac May, the 2021 Pac-12 Player of the Year.
  • 1 key fact: The Bruins' 16 conference wins in 2021 were their most since 2011 when they won the national championship.

No. 19 Oregon Ducks

  • 2021 in review: The Ducks went 22-9 overall and 13-7 in the Pac-12, tied with Stanford and Washington State for fourth place. They lost to Kansas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
  • Ranked non-conference matches: vs. No. 20 Penn State (Sept. 10), at No. 5 Minnesota (Sept. 11)
  • 1 player to know: Senior outside hitter Brooke Nuneviller was an AVCA Second Team All-America for a second straight season in 2021 after leading the Ducks in points (467.5) and kills (428), while also placing second in digs (345). Her attacking skills will be boosted by the addition of setter Hannah Pukis, who transferred in from Washington State after twice making the Pac-12 all-conference team.
  • 1 key stat: Oregon was No. 1 in the Pac-12 in opposing hitting percentage (.181) last season.
  • 1 key fact: The Ducks have reached the NCAA Tournament in 10 of the last 11 seasons (2019 being the one year they missed it).

No. 24 USC Trojans

  • 2021 in review: The Trojans went 15-15 overall and 10-10 in the Pac-12, finding their groove in the latter half of the season, winning five of their last six matches.
  • Non-conference matches to watch: at No. 18 Creighton (Sept. 3), vs. No. 11 Kentucky (Sept. 3)
  • 1 player to know: Senior opposite hitter Skylar Fields is USC's lone representative on the Pac-12 preseason all-conference team after transferring in from Texas, where she was an All-American and second on the Longhorns in kills (353).
  • 1 key stat: USC returns the fewest percent of its points (37.3%) in the Pac-12.
  • 1 key fact: The Trojans added the No. 1 recruiting class in the country, according to PrepVolleyball.com.

Washington State Cougars

  • 2021 in review: The Cougars went 20-12 overall and 13-7 in the Pac-12, tied with Stanford and Oregon for fourth place. They earned their sixth straight NCAA Tournament bid — the longest streak in program history — and beat Northern Colorado in the first round before losing on the road to No. 5 Baylor in the second round.
  • Ranked non-conference matches: at No. 10 BYU (Aug. 17), at No. 5 Minnesota (Sept. 17)
  • 1 player to know: A two-time All-American, senior middle blocker Magda Jehlarova returns after leading the Cougs in points (407.5) and finishing second in kills (277). She and Pia Timmer, who's led WSU in kills for three straight seasons, represented the Cougs on the preseason all-conference team.
  • 1 key stat: Thanks in big part to Jehlarova, WSU averaged 2.44 blocks per set in 2021, the second-most in the Pac-12.
  • 1 key fact: Jen Greeny shared the 2021 Pac-12 Coach of the Year award with UCLA’s Michael Sealy. Greeny was rewarded this offseason with an extension that will keep her in Pullman until at least 2027.

No. 22 Utah Utes

  • 2021 in review: The Utes went 22-9 overall and 14-6 in the Pac-12, a third-place finish behind Washington and UCLA. Utah received its sixth straight NCAA Tournament bid and beat Utah Valley in the first round before falling on the road to No. 11 BYU in the second round.
  • Ranked non-conference matches: vs. No. 23 Kansas (Aug. 26), at No. 13 Purdue (Sept. 2), at No. 25 San Diego (Sept. 10), vs. No. 10 BYU (Sept. 15).
  • 1 player to know: Fifth-year outside hitter Madelyn Robinson averaged 3.01 kills per set and tallied 340 kills in 2021, which ranked second on the team and earned her a spot on the All-Pac-12 First Team.
  • 1 key stat: The Utes only return 38.6% of their points, the second-fewest in the Pac-12.
  • 1 key fact: Utah has been ranked in the AVCA Top 25 for 45 consecutive weeks dating back to Sept. 2, 2019.

Arizona State Sun Devils

  • 2021 in review: The Sun Devils went 14-17 overall and 7-12 in the Pac-12, a ninth-place finish.
  • Ranked non-conference matches: at No. 9 Georgia Tech (Sept. 3), at No. 16 Baylor (Sept. 10)
  • 1 player to know: The lone Sun Devil to make the 2021 All-Pac-12 Team, senior outside hitter Iman Isanovic played every set of every match last season and led ASU in points (557.5), aces (34) and kills (490).
  • 1 key stat: The Sun Devils return nine of their 10 point scorers and 93.3% of their scoring from last season, the most in the Pac-12.
  • 1 key fact: ASU is pursuing its first NCAA Tournament bid in seven years and its first winning conference season since 1999.

Colorado Buffaloes

  • 2021 in review: The Buffaloes went 15-14 overall and 6-14 in the Pac-12, a 10th-place finish.
  • Non-conference matches to watch: at No. 17 Illinois (Sept. 3)
  • 1 player to know: Grad student and star libero Brynna DeLuzio led the Buffaloes and Pac-12 with 500 digs in 2021, breaking Colorado's single-season record. She also led the Buffs with 25 aces and earned an All-Pac-12 honorable mention.
  • 1 key stat: The Buffaloes return their top four point scorers from 2021, including junior outside hitter Maya Tabron who led the Buffaloes in points (400.5), and kills (352) last season, earning an all-conference honorable mention.
  • 1 key fact: Colorado has not had a losing home record since 2011 and is 56-31 at home under seventh-year head coach Jesse Mahoney.

Arizona Wildcats

  • 2021 in review: The Wildcats went 17-16 overall and 8-12 in the Pac-12, a ninth-place finish.
  • Non-conference matches to watch: Arizona doesn't have any matches against preseason top-25 teams, but it does visit North Carolina (Sept. 3), which is receiving votes in the AVCA poll. 
  • 1 player to know: Junior outside hitter Sofia Maldonado Diaz has been super productive through her first two seasons at Arizona, racking up 625 kills. The Mexican national teamer led the Wildcats with 419.5 points last season, though fellow junior Jaelyn Hodge actually led the team with 373 kills, the 10th-most in the Pac-12.
  • 1 key stat: The Wildcats return all six starters and 88.1% of their points from last season, the second-most in the Pac-12.
  • 1 key fact: Entering his 31st season at Arizona, head coach Dave Rubio leads all active conference coaches with 512 victories as a Pac-12 coach. He has led the Wildcats to 20 NCAA Tournaments, though none since 2018.

Oregon State Beavers

  • 2021 in review: The Beavers went 5-25 overall and 3-17 in the Pac-12, finishing 11th in the Conference.
  • Non-conference matches to watch: OSU doesn't have any matches against preseason top-25 teams or teams receiving votes in the AVCA poll.
  • 1 player to know: Senior setter Inna Balyko transferred to Oregon State after a decorated career at Rutgers, where she tallied 3,432 assists and made the All-Big Ten First Team in 2020-21.
  • 1 key stat: Balyko should stabilize an offense that ranked last in the Pac-12 in hitting percentage (.163) in 2021.
  • 1 key fact: The Beavers are searching for their first winning season since 2017.

California Golden Bears

  • 2021 in review: The Golden Bears went 7-24 overall and 0-20 in the Pac-12.
  • Non-conference matches to watch: Cal doesn't have any matches against preseason top-25 teams or teams receiving votes in the AVCA poll.
  • 1 player to know: Junior Leah Schmidt is by far the Bears' most proven hitter, finishing third on the team with 200 kills last season. No other returner had more than 113.
  • 1 key stat: The Golden Bears lost three of their top four point scorers from last season, including their top two.
  • 1 key fact: Cal's eight years without a postseason appearance is the longest current drought among Pac-12 schools.
