Hockey Captains Named, Josh Doan Dons the 'C'

Aug 26, 2022

TEMPE, Ariz – Sun Devil Hockey head coach Greg Powers announced the captains for the 2022-23 season on Friday morning. Scottsdale native Josh Doan is captain, accompanied by graduate forward Demetrios Koumontzis and senior defenseman Jacob Semik as alternate captains for the highly anticipated inaugural season in Mullett Arena.

"This group of leaders is ready for the challenge that lies ahead," said Powers. "All three bleed maroon and gold in every way and I'm incredibly excited to see all of their success this season."

Doan is coming off a stellar freshman year after setting two ASU single-season records for total points (37) and assists by a freshman (25) and a run as a finalist for the Tim Taylor Rookie of the Year award. The Arizona Coyotes draft pick played in all 35 possible games throughout his freshman campaign, averaging over a point per game. He also had 10 multi-point games last season which included three games with at least three points.

Going into his fifth year with the program, Koumontzis ended last season with four goals, seven assists, and a +7 in 23 games. Another Scottsdale native, Koumontzis wore the 'A' during the final year at Oceanside Ice Arena in 2021-22.

A senior this season, Semik was awarded the alternate captain role for the second time. He served as an 'A' alongside Koumontzis last year while appearing in 34 games. Semik sets the example in the classroom and was awarded Pac-12 All-Academic honors and earned the Krampade All-American Scholar Award (must have a 3.75 GPA or above) in 2021-22.

The three will lead a team of 28 players into a new era of Sun Devil Hockey at Mullett Arena. ASU's season opener is on Oct. 1 at Minnesota Duluth and the home opener is against Colgate on Oct. 14.
