Bears Open Homestand On Friday Against Bellarmine

The Bears begin a four-game homestand on Friday when Bellarmine comes to Underhill Field.

BERKELEY – The California field hockey team makes its 2022 home debut on Friday when Bellarmine comes to Underhill Field. The Golden Bears will host the Knights and Indiana as part of a season-long four-game homestand.
 
Cal and Bellarmine will face off at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. On Sunday morning the Bears and Hoosiers are slated for an 11:00 a.m. start. AT A GLANCE

  • Home Sweet Home: The Bears will make their 2022 home debut on Friday night when Bellarmine comes to Underhill Field. The game between the Bears and Knights begins a season-long four-game homestand that will include contests against Indiana, North Carolina, and Wake Forest. Last season, the Golden Bears went 5-3 at home, over the last 10 years Cal has gone 35-32 at the friendly confines.
  • Strong Debut: Cal had three newcomers make strong debuts last week. Grad transfer Luzi Persiehl recorded four shots for the weekend with a goal. Junior midfielder Caoimhe Byrne started both contests in the midfield for the Bears and Freshman Olivia Sharratt started both contests for the Bears taking four shots with two o goal.  
  • Second Half Attack: Last week, the Golden Bears scored twice in their opening weekend. In both contests all both goals came in the second half. Cal scored their first goal of the season in the fourth quarter against Miami (OH) and in the third quarter against Ohio.
  • Shots Galore: Cal has taken 29 shots through two contests, averaging 14.5 shots per game. That ranks fourth in the America East. The Bears' 6.0 shots on goal per game ranks third in the AE.
  • Getting Their Corners: After two contests, the Bears rank 17th in the nation and second in the AE in penalty corners, averaging 7.0 a game. Cal had seven corners against both Miami and Ohio last weekend.
  • Between the Pipes: Senior Cato Knipping tallied seven saves last weekend, five against Miami and two against Ohio. Her 3.5 saves per game ranks 45th in the nation and sixth in the America East.

ABOUT THE KNIGHTS
Bellarmine enters this weekend 0-2 after falling to Rider 4-1 to begin the 2022 campaign and 1-0 to Lock Haven last Sunday. The Knights are members of the MAC and are in year three of their transition to Division I. Last season, Bellarmine went 4-12 winning three of their last four games. This season, they bring back 88 percent of their roster from last year, including everyone who scored a goal.  
  
SERIES HISTORY
Friday will be the first ever meeting between the Golden Bears and the Knights.  

ABOUT THE HOOSIERS
Indiana is 0-2 heading into their Northern California road trip. The Hoosiers will take on Stanford on Friday before taking on the Golden Bears on Sunday morning. Last season, Indiana went 10-10, including a 5-5 on the road. The Hoosiers have yet to score a goal this season, falling to Kent State 1-0 in the 2022 debut and 2-0 to No. 6 Liberty last Sunday. Top returners for Indiana include defender Sydney Keld, forward Jemima Cookson and defender Yip van Wonderen who were all named to the Big Ten's Preseason Players to Watch List.
 
SERIES HISTORY
Sunday marks the 11th time the Bears and Hoosiers have squared off. The series is knotted up 5-5 with Cal winning the last meeting 2-1 in Davis on Sep. 7, 2015. The first ever meeting took place Sep. 8, 2002 at Indiana with the Bears winning 1-0.  

UP NEXT
Next week Cal wraps up its season-long four game home stand when ACC foes North Carolina and Wake Forest come to Berkeley. The Bears will host the Tarheels on Friday, Sep. 9 at 4:00 p.m. The Demon Deacons and Golden Bears will battle at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Sep. 11.
