Field Hockey Topped in OT by Indiana

STANFORD, Calif. – Returning home for its second consecutive contest against a Big Ten opponent, and its second consecutive overtime battle on the Varsity Turf, Stanford field hockey was outlasted by Indiana, 3-2. The Cardinal moves to 1-2 this season.

Haley Mossmer and Molly Redgrove scored for Stanford, with each registering their first goal of the season. Rose Winter and Fenella Scutt dished their team-leading second assists, with Winter leading the squad with four points this season. Caroline Reinhart also earned her first assist of the campaign.

"I thought that Indiana really challenged us with their drop-off, zonal press. We knew coming into the game that we were going to have to be patient and control the tempo, and problem solve through each quarter," said head coach Roz Ellis. "Good moments from us – absolutely. I'm proud of how we advanced our press and how we pressured together. I liked how we chucked skimmers into the circle to get anything on goal, that was great."

Stanford outshot Indiana (1-2) by a 13-4 margin and held a 4-3 advantage in penalty corners. The Cardinal opened the scoring off a corner in the second quarter when Winter and Scutt set up a rocket from Redgrove that found the bottom corner. The goal was the difference in the first half, as Stanford lead 1-0 at the break.

Indiana leveled the contest, 1-1, in the 32nd minute, but Stanford responded in the fourth quarter to regain the lead, 2-1. Reinhart picked out Mossmer with a pass into the arc, with Mossmer turning and firing home a powerful shot past the goalkeeper. The Hoosiers equalized two minutes later, sending the game to overtime.

The Hoosiers broke free in the extra period at the seven-minute mark, winning the game with a golden goal.

"There's going to games where we win and we don't feel good about our performance, so we need to be able to understand when we feel like we controlled the game and we lost, what did that actually boil down to," continued Ellis. "We need to be able to hold onto and harness that because we have another game on Sunday."

Stanford returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 4 against Michigan State. The action gets underway at noon on the Varsity Turf.
