Armas Brace Lifts Beavers Over No. 11 Denver

DENVER, Colo. – Javier Armas scored an incredible brace as the Oregon State men's soccer team took down No. 11 Denver 2-1 Tuesday evening in Denver, Colo.
 
The Beavers found themselves down in the second half, but Armas netted a pair of goals in the final 22 minutes of play with both coming on strikes from outside the box. Joran Gerbet and Mouhameth Thiam both recorded assists in the contest.
 
Oregon State played the final 50 minutes with a man advantage, after the Pioneers had a player sent off with a red card late in the first half. Overall, OSU held a 10-5 advantage on shots in the contest.
 
The Beavers created the first scoring chance of the match in the 15th minute, narrowly missing from 10 yards out. Luis Castillo made a diving stop in the 19th minute to keep the match level.
 
Clarence Awoudor came up with a pair of scoring chances in the 23rd minute, forcing a save with a shot from a tight angle, and pushing one over the crossbar from 25 yards out. David Perez put one just over the bar in the 39th.
 
The Pioneers were reduced to 10 players in the 41st minute following a red card. The teams headed to the break scoreless.
 
Oregon State started the second half on the front foot, but Denver scored against the run of play in the 51st minute.
 
Armas took aim looking to even things up in the 54th minute, but his shot from distance was saved. He nearly eqaulized in the 60th minute with a wicked strike that forced a diving stop from the Pioneer keeper.
 
The third time was the charm for Armas, as he leveled the score from 26 yards out in the 68th minute. The junior put the Beavers in front in the 80th with an incredible strike from well outside the 18-yard box.
 
The Beavers were able to put the game away from there, taking the 2-1 victory.
 
The Beavers will open Pac-12 play on Sept. 29 when they visit UCLA.
