Maroon Wins First Fall Ball Scrimmage

Sep 22, 2022

TEMPE – Sun Devil Softball is back in action as they opened their fall ball slate with an intrasquad Maroon and Gold scrimmage on Thursday under the lights at Farrington Stadium.

"We had a lot of people on base to show off some of that new, shiny speed," head coach Megan Bartlett said. "It's a nice change of pace, we're pretty excited about it and we saw some brilliant outfield play."

The Maroon squad struck first as Jazmine Hill hit a two-run homer which also brought in Makenna Harper in the top of the first.

Jazmyn Rollin stole second and then third and scored thanks to a Kalyn McCarthy single for the Maroon in the top of the second. The Gold got on the board in the bottom of the second off a single that brought in Taylor Nicholson to make it 3-1 and another run made it 3-2.

Rollin and Harper of the Maroon squad tacked on two more runs in the top of the third to increase their lead further, 5-2.

A two-run home run by Harper and a single increased Maroon's lead further to 8-2 going into the bottom of the fourth.

Both squads were scoreless the last three innings as Maroon held on to take the first Maroon and Gold scrimmage, 8-2.

Sophomore Kenzie Brown got the start for Maroon and struck out the side in the first inning as she would pitch three-and-one third innings allowing only two hits in her appearance, while Marissa Schuld got the start for team gold and pitched three innings which included six strikeouts.

The Sun Devils will be back in action next week as they host South Mountain Community College on Friday, Sept. 30 at 6 p.m. at Farrington Stadium.

ASU Head Softball Coach Megan Bartlett:
On managing her first Maroon & Gold Scrimmage
"It's an honor, really excited to be here, so much history and tradition. It is one of the best softball jobs in the country. The girls have been amazing and the ASU community has been really welcoming. I take it really seriously and I'm honored to lead the program and we're going to work every day to be right by it."

On Team Bonding:
"They're doing a nice job, that's the really nice thing about it even though we lost some really important pieces. We have some incredible veterans within our program like Yanni Acuna, Jaz Hill, Jaz Rollin. They've all done a really nice job of welcoming the new ones and young ones and teaching them what ASU softball is about. There's still so much talent and so much pride in the program which is amazing."

On being back with Deborah Jones:

"Like no time passed oddly enough. I had her since she was 18. She's a great kid and comes from a great family. It was a happy fit the first time around and have tons of trust and a lot of love. She bled black and red at the time and an all-in kid. Does whatever she's asked, a great teammate we're thrilled she wanted to come back with us."
