No. 2 Washington Snags 4-1 Victory Over Grand Canyon

Sep 24, 2022

PHOENIX – The No. 2 Washington men's soccer team defeated Grand Canyon 4-1 Saturday night.

The Dawgs remain undefeated on the year with a 7-0-1 record heading into conference play.

Tonight's win marks the third consecutive game Washington has scored four goals and the fourth time this season.

The Lopes, coming off a 2-2 tie with #18 UC Santa Barbara, had no offensive momentum against the Dawgs.

The Huskies were led by Lucas Meek in the first half, who single handedly put Washington on the board 2-0. His first goal was the result of a corner kick in the 13th minute off a double assist from Chris Meyers and Gio Miglietti.

Meek strummed his goal celebration 'flag guitar' in the corner of the field once again in the 20th minute thanks to another Chris Meyers assist. Meyers crossed it into the middle, right into the feet of Meek who notched the goal into the bottom right of the net.

Meek has historically padded the stats sheet during matchups with the Lopes. Tonight was Meek's third two-goal game of his career, the last one also coming against Grand Canyon last season.

Christian Soto crushed the ball from just outside the box to extend the Husky lead in the 48th minute. Soto footed the Husky rebound off a corner kick to net his fourth goal of the season.

Grand Canyon played the last twenty minutes of the evening with a man down after a red card was issued to the Lopes' Ben Awashie. GCU got on the board in the 84th minute on a penalty kick goal, but it was all cosmetic as Husky offense continued to roll in the final minutes.

Richie Aman flaunted some fancy footwork and netted his first career goal in the 86th minute, putting the Dawgs up 4-1.

The Huskies outshot Grand Canyon 20-9 with 11 of their 20 shots on goal.

Washington will begin Pac-12 play at San Diego State (Sept. 29) and at UCLA (Oct. 2). Washington returns home on Oct. 6 against Stanford.
