Buffs Battle In Two Tournaments

SAN DIEGO/FORT COLLINS — The University of Colorado women's tennis team competed hard in the Jon Messick Invitational at CSU and San Diego Intercollegiate Championships Friday, picking up a pair of victories in the process.
 
The Buffaloes picked up a win at each location with Ellen Puzak and Anya Nelson winning an opening-round doubles match at CSU against a tandem from Weber State 6-4. In San Diego, the win came from Elys Ventura against conference-foe Gabrielle Lee of USC with a two-set consolation victory 6-2, 7-6(6).
 
It was a tough day for most of the Buffaloes. Aya El Sayed had to withdraw from the competition in San Diego after an opening round victory in singles play. El Sayed's withdraw stopped the team's run in doubles as well, as Antonia Balzert did not compete today either.
 
In Fort Collins, CU fell in its first three singles matches. Carri Hayes dropped her opening match by a pair of 6-1 sets to Beata Havlickova of South Dakota in flight A. Puzak dropped a two-setter to Caroline Driscoll of Denver 6-0, 6-2, and Nelson fell 6-0, 7-5 to Yangpingan Li of Weber State.
 
Responding from singles, Puzak and Nelson battled hard in the next round of doubles but fell 6-1 to a duo from Denver.
 
Colorado continues action in exhibition and consolation matches in both tournaments Saturday and Sunday.
