Hockey Leads #5 Bulldogs Through Regulation, Falls in OT

Oct 1, 2022

DULUTH, Minn. -- The Arizona State men's ice hockey team brought its high-octane offense to AMSOIL Arena on Saturday night against No. 5 Minnesota Duluth with goals from sophomore Jack Jensen and junior Lukas Sillinger. The Sun Devil squad battled in the season opener in front of transfer netminder TJ Semptimphelter, who made 38 saves in his first performance donning the maroon and gold.

ASU (0-1-0) set the pace, scoring the opening goal on the power play in the first period and lit the lamp again only one minute into the third period. UMD (1-0-0) rallied after ASU's momentum and repeatedly tied the score, pushing the season opener to overtime. The Bulldogs ultimately claimed the win in 3-on-3 sudden death overtime as the Sun Devils fell 2-3.

Sophomore netminder TJ Semptimphelter diffused Bulldog opportunities left and right, notching 38 saves, the second-most by an ASU goaltender in a season opener behind Joey Daccord's 42 saves at then-No. 8 Notre Dame on October 7, 2016.

The teams appeared evenly matched statistically through the first two periods. Both scored two goals, collected 20 shots on goal, and evenly split faceoff wins. ASU edged out UMD on power play opportunities, enjoying three one-man advantages in the first 40 minutes. ASU found the back of the net in the first 63 seconds of the third period, but again, UMD answered with another goal and continued to knock on the door through the end of regulation, outshooting ASU 19-8 in the final frame.

UP NEXT: ASU returns to AMSOIL Arena to close the series against No. 5 Minnesota Duluth on Sunday, October 2 at 2 p.m. MST. The game is available to stream on NCHC.tv for a fee or subscription.
