Shields Powers Offense To Five-Set Win At OSU

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Behind a career-high 50 assists from Shannon Shields, Sun Devil Volleyball came out on top in a five-set win (23-25, 25-18, 25-17, 22-25, 15-12) at Oregon State Sunday afternoon.

Notable Stats

  • Arizona State (8-8, 2-2 Pac-12) hit .276 against Oregon State (6-8, 1-3 Pac-12), with three reaching double-digit kills. The Sun Devil defense also held the Beavers to a .142 hitting percentage.
  • It was a career outing for senior setter Shields. Her personal best 50 assists surpassed her previous high of 45. She also had 10 digs for her second double-double of the season. She also had two aces and two blocks.
  • Senior outside hitter Iman Isanovic had 21 kills on a .400 clip, both season highs, to lead all players. This was her 11th match of her career earning 20-plus kills, first of the season. She also added 10 digs for her seventh double-double of the year, as well as three blocks.
  • Junior pin hitter Marta Levinska had her second double-double of the season with 19 kills and 12 digs. She had a strong clip as well, hitting .366.
  • The fourth player to reach double-digit digs was senior libero Annika Larson-Nummer with a team-best 13. She played the last four sets after Jaden Ravnsborg started the match. Ravnsborg had six digs.
  • Owning the net was junior middle blocker Claire Jeter. She had seven blocks to go along with her eight kills.
  • Sophomore Geli Cyr was the third Sun Devil to reach double figures in kills, earning 11. She also had a season-high in blocks with three.

Set One: OSU 25, ASU 23
The Sun Devils got off to a slow start, but a kill by Isanovic got them on the board. After going back-and-forth, ASU was able to tie things up at four apiece. A kill by Isanovic gave ASU their first lead amidst a 5-1 scoring run by the Sun Devils. OSU managed to tie things up later as the two teams continued to trade points, until a 17-14 OSU lead resulted in ASU calling a timeout. ASU tried to stage a late comeback, going on a four-point scoring run, but it wasn't enough as Oregon State was able to close out the set. 

Set Two: ASU 25, OSU 18
A kill by Andi Kreiling got the Sun Devils on the board to start the set. A 5-1 scoring run that saw two kills from Isanovic gave the Sun Devils a 10-6 lead. ASU continued to remain in front for the rest of the set, thanks to several long scoring runs, including a 9-2 run with Jeter serving five in a row, to finish the set. Isanovic had six kills throughout the frame.

Set Three: ASU 25, OSU 17
Levinska opened the set with a service ace for the Sun Devils. After that, it was a tight set with both teams trading points, until a 5-0 run by ASU with Shields serving made it a 16-12 advantage, forcing Oregon State to call a timeout. The Sun Devils were able to remain in control for the remainder of the set, a kill from Isanovic getting to set point and a Beavers error ending it. 

Set Four: OSU 25, ASU 22
ASU looked to close things out in the fourth set, but OSU responded. Oregon State went on a 4-0 run to make it 9-4 and force an early Arizona State timeout. But the Sun Devils were able to answer with a run of their own, scoring seven in a row to put them up 12-10. Levinska had six kills throughout that run, including three-straight kills by the junior pin hitter. From there, neither team was able to create much separation with eight ties throughout the frame. The Beavers finally got a run, scoring three in a row to win the set.

Set Five: ASU 15, OSU 12
Oregon State got off to a 3-0 start in the final set, but ASU was able to sideout with a kill by Isanovic. A 5-0 scoring run put the Sun Devils up 6-4 and forced Oregon State to call a timeout. After going back and forth for the remainder of the set, a block assist by Levinska and Jeter put Oregon State away for good.

The Sun Devils finally return home next weekend after five-straight weeks on the road. Arizona State will take on the UCLA Bruins on Friday, October 7, before playing USC on Sunday, October 9.
