Golfers Tied For Third In Suspended Simpson-CU Invitational

Oct 3, 2022
Freshman Hunter Swanson is 3-under par through 27 holes of the Simpson-CU Invite.

BOULDER — The University of Colorado men's golf team is in the hunt for the title in its own 12th Annual Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational, though Monday's play was suspended in the late afternoon due to lightning and heavy rains.

Teams had anywhere from six to 10 holes to complete in the second round; the Buffaloes are tied for third at 5-under par, with two of its scorers having eight holes to finish, and one each needing six, seven and nine, respectively.  Rice and Wyoming are tied for the lead at 7-under; Arkansas State is also 5-under with Louisiana-Monroe rounding out the top five with an even score.

The Buffs were tied for second after a 6-under 274 score in the morning round, trailing Wyoming by three strokes.

Freshman Hunter Swanson is leading the Buffalo attack on Boulder Country Club's 7,106-yard, par-70 layout for the event.  He had a 68 in the morning and was 3-under overall with nine holes left to play.  Tied for third overall, he has six birdies and 18 pars with three bogeys and will resume action on No. 13 Tuesday.  He's one off the lead, as four players resume second round play at 4-under.

When play was called, Colorado led the 16-team field with 27 birdies, with seven coming from sophomore Hunter Clark, who shot a 4-under 66 in the morning.  He's one of four Buffaloes in the top 17 at present, tied for 10th at 1-under; sophomore Dylan McDermott is also 1-under and soph Justin Biwer is even, tied for 17th.  Both McDermott and Biwer logged six birdies into the books Monday.

Play will resume Tuesday morning with the completion of the second round at 7:30 a.m.; it will be a shotgun start with players picking up where they left off, and then will continue play directly into the third round.  Colorado will again be paired with Denver, Washington State and Wyoming.

NOTES: This year's individual champion of the Simpson will earn an exemption into The Ascendant presented by Blue at TPC Colorado, next July 10-16 in Berthoud, Colo., one of the newer stops on the Korn Ferry Tour … The average score for Monday's 92 rounds was 72.12 … Wyoming also had four scorers in the top 17 along with CU.
