Dawgs Take Five Of Six From Ducks

SEATTLE – A second straight strong performance from the Husky women's tennis team was highlighted by five singles wins in six matches against Pac-12 rival Oregon. The Husky Invitational completed the second of three days at Washington's Nordstrom Tennis Center.
 
The Huskies and Ducks matched up for six singles matches, with UW winning five, ending with a couple third set triumphs.
 
First up, racing to a 6-0, 6-0 win was Sarah-Maude Fortin over Lillian Mould. Astrid Olsen then had a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Ares Teixido Garcia. Melissa Sakar pulled out a second set tiebreak to conclude a 6-3, 7-6 win over Jo-Yee Chan.
 
Unlike on Friday where UW won seven of its eight matches in straight sets, the Dawgs were pushed into third sets today on five courts, and came out on top in three. Jennifer Kerr outlasted Oregon's Karin Young, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3. Hikaru Sato had a big win over Myah Petchey, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3. Then Ashley Chang, playing DePaul's Hannah Smith, earned a 6-3, 5-7, 7-3 win.
 
Freshman Erika Matsuda fell short in three against Oregon's Misaki Kobayashi, 6-7, 7-4, 6-2. Yolanda Lin also fell in three sets to DePaul's Valentina Martin, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.
 
Washington began the afternoon in doubles, playing four matches against DePaul, and winning three. Melissa Sakar and Hikaru Sato were 6-4 winners over Smith/Carbone. Ashley Chang and Yolanda Lin were 6-3 winners over Yergler/Nobbs. And Jennifer Kerr and Erika Matsuda won a 6-1 match with Perova/Martin.
 
The tournament concludes on Sunday when the Huskies and Washington State are scheduled for singles play.
