Cal Clashes With UCLA, SDSU In SoCal

BERKELEY – The California men's soccer team travels to Southern California this week to take on UCLA and San Diego State in Pac-12 Conference action. The Golden Bears will play the Bruins on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and then face SDSU on Sunday at 3 p.m.
 
Cal has a 3-5-4 record (1-3-1 in the Pac-12) heading into the game with the Bruins (7-4-1, 2-2-1 Pac-12). SDSU is 5-6-2 (1-3-1 Pac-12) ahead of its Thursday match vs. No. 5 Stanford in San Diego.

Honda Scores In Cal's Loss To Dons
Cal fell to visiting San Francisco, 5-1, on Oct. 15 at Edwards Stadium. With the Bears trailing 1-0, Shoei Honda scored his fourth goal of the year – on a Wyatt Meyer assist – to tie the game at 1-1 just before halftime. The Dons scored four in the second half to wrap up the game.
 
Scouting the Bears

  • Fahmi Ibrahim leads Cal in points (10) and goals (5)
  • Ibrahim is also tied for fourth in goals and tied for fifth in points in the Pac-12
  • Sophomore forward Shoei Honda ranks second in goals (4) and points (8) at Cal
  • In the Pac-12, Honda is tied for sixth in goals and tied for 11th in points
  • Junior midfielder Wyatt Meyer and senior midfielder Juan Martinez are tied for the team lead in assists (2)
  • Sophomore defender Kevin Carmichael leads Cal in minutes played at 1,025
  • Nonso Adimabua earned national distinction when the United Soccer Coaches named him to its list of 30 forwards to watch this season
  • Redshirt junior goalkeeper Collin Travasos has three shutouts and a 1.31 goals-against average in 10 starts
  • In the Pac-12, Travasos ranks third in saves (35), fourth in save percentage (.729) and fifth in GAA
  • Freshman goalkeeper Marco Brougher, who has started the last two games, has a 2.99 GAA
  • Evan Davila and Wyatt Meyer have family connections to Cal. Taylor Davila, Evan's brother, patrolled the Bears' midfield from 2018-19, and now plays professionally for the Los Angeles Galaxy II. Jennifer Thomas, Meyer's mother, played for the Cal women's soccer team from 1982-85, and was an assistant coach for the Cal women's team for 11 seasons.
  • Head coach Leonard Griffin returned to Cal in March 2022, after leading Grand Canyon to a 15-4-1 record and to the NCAA tournament in fall 2021. His first head coaching job was at San Francisco from 2019-2021. A UCLA alumnus (class of 2005) and a former Cal assistant coach in 2013, Griffin was part of the Bruins' NCAA championship team in 2002.

Scouting UCLA

  • The Bruins have won two straight games, beating SDSU, 2-0, on Oct. 7 in Los Angeles and winning at LMU, 2-0, on Oct. 14
  • Forwards Kevin Diaz and Constantinos Michaelides are tied for the UCLA lead in goals (3) and in points (7)
  • Diaz is tied with forward Jose Contell for the team high in gamewinning goals (2)
  • Defender Tommy Silva leads the Bruins in assists (5) and is tied for fifth in assists in the Pac-12
  • Goalkeeper Nate Crockford ranks second in saves (36) and save percentage (.783) and is third in GAA (0.83) in the Pac-12
  • Ryan Jorden is in his fourth season as UCLA's head coach

Scouting SDSU

  • SDSU hosts Stanford on Thursday at 7 p.m.
  • San Diego State split its previous two games, losing at UCLA, 2-0, on Oct. 7 and beating San Diego, 4-2, on Oct. 15 at home
  • Forward CJ Fodrey leads his team in goals (5), points (13) and gamewinning goals (2) and is tied for the SDSU lead in assists (3)
  • In the Pac-12, Fodrey ranks third in shots (29), ranks fourth in points and is tied for fourth in goals
  • Goalkeeper Jacob Castro has a 1.33 GAA and three shutouts, and he ranks first in the Pac-12 in saves (36)
  • Ryan Hopkins is in his third season as SDSU's head coach

Last Time Vs. UCLA, SDSU
In Cal's first meeting of the season with UCLA on Sept. 18 in Berkeley, the Bears lost to the 25th-ranked Bruins, despite a 40th-minute goal from Shoei Honda.
 
On Sept. 15 vs. San Diego State, Nonso Adimabua scored his first goal as a Bear in the 36th minute and Adrian Guzman, who set up Adimabua's goal, scored in the 43rd minute, as Cal won, 2-0, at Edwards Stadium.
 
Fer Play & BeLOnG Blog Feature Fernando Andrade
Fernando Andrade – the team's resident vlogger and podcast host, who writes the Bears' Fer Play blog – wrote the Sept. 19 BeLOnG Blog entry for CalBears.com. Entitled Just A Kid From Chula Vista, Andrade's post discusses identity and life as a Mexican American from the San Diego suburb.
