Cal Hosts No. 1 UW, Oregon State

Kevin Carmichael and the Bears end their season series with Washington on Thursday.

BERKELEY – The California men's soccer team returns home to host No. 1 Washington and Oregon State in a pair of Pac-12 Conference games on Goldman Field at Edwards Stadium. The 3-6-5 (1-4-2 Pac-12) Golden Bears take on the 12-0-2 Huskies (4-0-1 Pac-12) at 3 p.m. on Thursday and face the Beavers (5-3-4, 1-1-3 Pac-12 as of Oct. 25) at 12 p.m. on Sunday.

The two games are part of a three-game homestand that will close out the regular season for the Bears.
 
Bears Fall In L.A. & Tie SDSU
Fahmi Ibrahim scored a late penalty kick to deliver a 2-2 draw at San Diego State in Cal's last game, on Oct. 23 in San Diego. Defender Kevin Carmichael scored his first career goal in the 34th minute to give Cal a 1-0 lead, before SDSU scored twice midway through the second half. An SDSU handball in the box led to Ibrahim's 87th minute PK.
 
On Oct. 20, Cal fell at UCLA, 1-0, on a goal by Jose Contell in the 42nd minute.
 
Scouting the Bears

  • Fahmi Ibrahim leads Cal in points (12) and goals (6)
  • Ibrahim is also tied for third in goals and tied for fifth in points in the Pac-12
  • Sophomore forward Shoei Honda ranks second in goals (4) and points (8) at Cal
  • In the Pac-12, Honda is tied for seventh in goals and tied for 14th in points
  • Junior midfielder Wyatt Meyer leads the team in assists (3)
  • Sophomore defender Kevin Carmichael leads Cal in minutes played at 1,205
  • Nonso Adimabua earned national distinction when the United Soccer Coaches named him to its list of 30 forwards to watch this season
  • Redshirt junior goalkeeper Collin Travasos has three shutouts and a 1.34 goals-against average in 11 starts
  • In the Pac-12, Travasos ranks second in saves (44), third in save percentage (.733) and fifth in GAA
  • Freshman goalkeeper Marco Brougher, who has started two games, has a 2.99 GAA
  • Evan Davila and Wyatt Meyer have family connections to Cal. Taylor Davila, Evan's brother, patrolled the Bears' midfield from 2018-19, and now plays professionally for the Los Angeles Galaxy II. Jennifer Thomas, Meyer's mother, played for the Cal women's soccer team from 1982-85, and was an assistant coach for the Cal women's team for 11 seasons.
  • Head coach Leonard Griffin returned to Cal in March 2022, after leading Grand Canyon to a 15-4-1 record and to the NCAA tournament in fall 2021. His first head coaching job was at San Francisco from 2019-2021. A UCLA alumnus (class of 2005) and a former Cal assistant coach in 2013, Griffin was part of the Bruins' NCAA championship team in 2002.

Scouting the Huskies

  • In its last game, UW tied Oregon State, 1-1, on Oct. 21 in Corvallis, Oregon, in one of only two blemishes (both ties) on the Huskies' record
  • Midfielder Lucas Meek leads the Pac-12 in points (26), is tied with teammate Ilijah Paul for the Pac-12 leads in goals (9) and is tied with UW's Chris Meyers for the conference lead in assists (8)
  • Forward Nick Scardina paces the Huskies in gamewinning goals (4)
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Jadon Bowton, who has started the last four games, has a 0.24 GAA and three shutouts on the season
  • Jamie Clark is in his 12th season as UW's head coach

Scouting the Beavers

  • Oregon State plays at No. 5 Stanford on Thursday at 8 p.m.
  • The Beavers tied No. 1 Washington, 1-1, in its last game on Oct. 21
  • Midfielder Mouhameth Thiam leads his team in points (10) and is tied with forward Ellis Spikner and midfielder Dante Williams for the high in goals (3)
  • Goalkeeper Luis Castillo has a 1.27 GAA and three shutouts; he made 4 saves in the recent tie with the Huskies
  • Castillo ranks fourth in GAA and fifth in saves (25) in the Pac-12
  • Terry Boss is in his fifth season as head coach of the Beavers

 Last Time Vs. OSU & UW
Cal tied Oregon State, 1-1, in the teams' meeting in Corvallis on Oct. 6. After Dante Williams gave OSU a lead in the ninth minute, Fahmi Ibrahim equalized in the 53rd. The senior Bear stole the ball about 30 yards from the Oregon State goal and dribbled into the box. He roofed a shot past goalkeeper Luis Castillo to tie the game.
 
On Oct. 9 in Seattle, Cal lost 1-0 to No. 1 Washington on a headed goal by Gio Miglietti. Marco Brougher made his first career start in goal for the Bears and made three saves.
 
Fer Play By Fernando Andrade
Fernando Andrade posted the latest entry in Fer Play, the Cal men's soccer blog on CalBears.com, on Tuesday. The Cal midfielder/defender shared his thoughts on why the Bears do what they do and on what motivates them, particularly in light of the team's recent trip to UCLA and San Diego State.
 
Earlier this fall Andrade wrote the BeLOnG Blog entry for Sept. 19 on CalBears.com. Entitled Just A Kid From Chula Vista, Andrade's post discusses identity and life as a Mexican American from the San Diego suburb. The busy Bear was also profiled over the summer in this Cal Sports Quarterly feature, Relentless Dedication.
