Buffaloes Fall in Opening Colorado Cup Round
DENVER- Colorado women's tennis team dropped the opening dual against Denver here Friday by a score of 5-2 in the first round of the Colorado Cup.
The Buffaloes started the day with a huge win in the doubles point. After falling in the No.1 doubles match, Colorado rallied back with a pair of tiebreak victories in the No.2 and No.3 doubles matches. Elys Ventura and Mila Stanojevic picked up the first win against Caroline Driscoll and Claudia Martinez de Velasco 7-6(5), then Ellen Puzak and Anya Nelson finished off the point with a tough-fought 7-6(7) win against Anastasia Simonov and Louise Wikander in the No.3 doubles match.
Heading into singles play, the Pioneers jumped out to a quick victory with four-straight singles match wins. Simonov defeated Carri Hayes 6-0, 6-3 in the No.6 singles match, followed by Wikander winning 6-3, 6-0 against Nelson in the No.5 singles match. Ventura fell in the No.3 singles match to Driscoll 6-1, 6-4, then the clinching point was added in the No.1 singles match where Aya El Sayed was defeated by Britt Pursell 6-4, 6-3.
The Buffaloes picked up their second team point in the No.2 singles match with Antonia Balzert defeating Andrea Burguete Beltran with a pair of 6-4 sets. CU's final match saw Stanojevic go three rounds with Martinez de Velasco. Stanojevic fell in the first set 7-5, then dominated the second 6-1. In the third, the two went to a tiebreaker where Martinez de Velasco won 7-6(4).
Colorado returns tomorrow to take on Air Force at 1:30 p.m. before finishing out fall competition against CSU.
