Lizzy DeCecco to Receive 2022 Utah Athletes in Service Award

Nov 11, 2022

SALT LAKE CITY – Utah senior diver Lizzy DeCecco has been announced as one of recipients of the 2022 Utah Athletes in Service Award, given annually to student-athletes who demonstrate commitment to community engagement. DeCecco will be presented with the award at halftime of Saturday's football game between Utah and Stanford.

"I'm really lucky to be here," said DeCecco, "and I have a lot to give. I love to try and give what I can to other people who might need it because I'm really lucky to have everything I need. I put a lot of time into the community and it's nice to be recognized for that."

For the past year, DeCecco has volunteered at the Feed U Pantry, which is a program whose goal is to make sure no individuals at the University of Utah go hungry. Earlier in the year, DeCecco traveled to Ecuador for the Ute Academy's leadership service trip, where she also volunteered her time to try and inspire hope in the community.

"I'm very proud of Lizzy," said head coach Jonas Persson, "as well as very proud that a member of our program has won this award two years-in-a-row. It's a reflection on how passionate we are about both academics and being involved in the community and we're going to continue to push our athletes to excel in those areas in addition to being great athletically."

"She's a really great person," said diving coach Richard Marschner. "She downplays how much she does for everything and everyone and she's very humble about what she does. She does these things for the right reasons and it's not for recognition. She's a great person to have on the team and we're lucky to have her leadership."

This is the second straight year a member of the Utah swimming and diving team has been honored with this award. In 2021, diver Lexi Mills was chosen for her work with the American Red Cross.
