Washington Falls at No. 18 Gonzaga

Dec 9, 2022

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Facing off for the first time since 2019, Washington (7-3, 1-1) fell to 18th-ranked Gonzaga on Friday night by a score of 77-60 at McCarthey Athletic Center.

The Huskies held the Bulldogs to just 1-for-10 shooting to begin the game and also forced eight first-half turnovers, drawing three early charges. Cole Bajema scored 10 points in the first 20 minutes to lead the Huskies.

Gonzaga led by 10 at halftime, but the lead was 42-35 after Braxton Meah's dunk with 16:15 left. Gonzaga scored 15 of the next 19 points to build the lead to 18.

''They're a great offensive team and they go through those scoring spurts,'' Head Coach Mike Hopkins said. ''We talked a lot about poise. We felt like when we had a lead we turned it over a little too much and were too careless with the ball. On the road, you can't do that.''

Keion Brooks Jr. led Washington with 14 points and PJ Fuller II finished with 13 points and six assists.

Gonzaga extended the nation's longest active home winning streak to 70 games. Drew Timme scored 22 points and Julian Strawther added 18 points and 12 rebounds.
