Ryan Murphy Wins Gold At FINA World Championships (25m)

Dec 14, 2022
Ryan Murphy captured a pair of gold medals at the 2022 FINA World Championships on Wednesday in Melbourne, Australia.

MELBOURNE, Australia – Former California men's swimmer Ryan Murphy had a busy evening on the second day of the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Center. The captain for Team USA won two gold medals, first in the 4x50 mixed medley relay and then later that evening in the 100m backstroke.

In the mixed medley, the quartet of Murphy, Nic Fink, Kate Douglas, and Torri Huske finished with a world record time of 1:35.15 en route to a gold medal.  The time was 1.03 seconds faster than the previous time set by the Netherlands in November 2021. Murphy's backstroke split of 22:37 would have been good enough for an American record, but American records aren't recognized in mixed relays.

An hour later, Murphy won his 10th career championship medal, and fifth gold, when he won the 100m backstroke with a time of 48.50, a new championship record. It is Murphy's second world title in the event, having won it previously in 2018.

Murphy will return to the pool this afternoon for the prelims of the 50m back, which are slated to begin at 4:19 p.m. PT. The semifinals are scheduled to begin at 12:59 a.m. PT. Murphy will also be competing in the 200m backstroke which will take place on Saturday at 5:03 p.m. PT.
