Former Golden Bear Trenton Julian helped the United States win gold in the 4x200 free relay at the FINA World Championships.

MELBOURNE, Australia – Add two more gold medals for former Cal men's swimmers. Trenton Julian won gold in the 4x200 free relay, setting a new world record. Meanwhile, Ryan Murphy continues his dominance at the FINA World Championships, winning the 50m backstroke on Friday morning.

Julian swam the third leg of the record-setting relay. The quartet of Kieran Smith, Carson Foster, Julian, and Drew Kibler finished with a time of 6:44.12, 2.79 seconds faster than the previous world record set by Brazil at the 2018 Championships in Hangzhou. Julian's opening 25m was the fastest split by the Americans at 10.53 seconds, he finished his 200 with a time of 1:41.44. The United States defeated runner-up Australia by 2.42 seconds.

The gold for Julian is his fifth career medal in the World Swimming Championships, and second at this meet. Earlier this week he helped Team USA capture bronze in the 4x100 free relay.

Murphy picks up his second gold medal of the World Championships with a win at the 50m back Friday morning with a time of 22.64. This is Murphy's third gold medal of the meet, having won gold in the 4x50 mixed medley relay that set a world record time and the 100m backstroke. This is his 11th medal overall in the World Swimming Championships and seventh career gold medal.

Murphy has a chance to add to his impressive collection when he competes in the 200m backstroke. The prelims for that event take place Saturday at 5:30 p.m. PT.
