Hard Fought Dual

TEMPE, Ariz. - No. 12 Stanford battled hard with No. 1 ASU, but ultimately fell to the Sun Devils on Friday afternoon by a score of 186-114. It marks Stanford's first dual meet loss since the winter of 2021 and only Schemmel's third loss at the helm of the program.

"We are proud of our performances today," said The Goldman Family Director of Men's Swimming Dan Schemmel. "We raced a tough team and walked away with several season bests. Our divers were particularly strong with Jack claiming both boards. The group is excited to compete again tomorrow!"

In the diving pool, Stanford swept the podium spots in the 3-meter, as Jack Ryan, Hunter Hollenbeck, and Ethan Foster finished in first, second, and third place. The trio scored 352.95, 318.08, and 315.98 respectively.

Ryan and Hollenbeck repeated their success on the 1-meter, finishing first and second in the event as well, with Foster adding fourth. Ryan scored a 324.38 for the win, while Hollenbeck recorded a 308.48 and Foster scored a 276.08.

In the racing pool, the Cardinal took second in the 200 medley relay to start the meet, with Leon MacAlister, Zhier Fan, Andrei Minakov, and Luke Maurer combining for a 1:24.47. It was Stanford's fastest time of the season in the event by three tenths of a second. Hayden Kwan, Ethan Dang, Jonathan Affeld, and Rafael Gu made up the B relay, taking fourth in the event and clocking a 1:26.22.

In the 1000 free, Matt Fenlon was Stanford's top finisher, taking third overall with a 9:04.06, only one one-hundredth behind an ASU swimmer in second place. Liam Custer and Andrew Matejka rounded out the heat for Stanford in fourth and fifth.

Ron Polonsky recorded the Cardinal's best time in the 200 free so far this season, clocking a 1:33.83 to take second place. Preston Forst, Andres Dupont, and Neel Roy all competed in the 200 free as well.

Leon MacAlister and Aaron Sequeira took second and third in the 100 back, finishing at 46.21 and 46.78 respectively. MacAlister took the event title in the 200 back, coming in at 1:41.26 to earn the top spot.

In the 100 breast, Zhier Fan led the way for Stanford, coming in second place with a 52.63, the best mark for any Cardinal swimmer in the event this year.

Andrei Minakov added a season-best mark for the Cardinal in the 50 free as well, taking second in the event at 19.62. Later in the meet, he claimed his second individual event title of the season in the 100 fly with a 45.07, nearly half a second faster than the next swimmer. Aaron Sequeira took third in the event as well at 46.23.

Preston Forst claimed a podium spot in the 500 free, clocking a 4:19.62 for second place, and Ron Polonsky added another silver medal in the 200 IM, coming in at 1:43.72.

In the final event, the 200 free relay, Andrei Minakov, Leon Macalister, Rafael Gu, and Luke Maurer combined for second place and a time of 1:18.15. Minakov's leadoff time of 19.55 became Stanford's best 50 free time of the year so far, topping his time from earlier in the meet.

Neel Roy, Andres Dupont, Aaron Sequeira, and Ethan Dang combined to take fourth in the event as well at 1:20.70.

Stanford is back in action on Saturday morning against No. 17 Arizona to wrap up its two meet road trip.
