ASU and California climb into first and second on day two of the Men's Swimming Championships

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – On day two of the Pac-12 Men’s Swimming Championships, rankings shifted as No. 1 Arizona State and No. 2 California creeped into first and second place. 

The top two teams in the country split the four wins on the night with Arizona State taking home the 200 IM and 50 Freestyle and Cal taking home the 500 Freestyle and the 200 Freestyle Relay.

The competition was headlined by Sun Devil Leon Marchand setting a new Pac-12 Championship record in the 200 IM and Cal’s Gabriel Jett and ASU’s Jack Dolan pulling out close first-place upsets. 

500 Freestyle

  • Jett, a Cal sophomore, swam a 4:09.66 in the first event of the day, taking first place overall. 
  • The winning time put him in second overall in the Golden Bears' record book and was the second-fastest time in the country this season.
  • Lucas Henveneaux, the leader after prelims, was knocked into second place by his fellow teammate, swimming a time of 4:11.16 and securing a fourth-place finish in the Cal record book. 
  • In third was Sun Devil Julian Hill with a time of 4:12.21. Already holding five spots in the ASU record book in the event, Hill recorded his personal best, bumping his previous second-place record book finish. 

200 Individual Medley 

  • ASU's Leon Marchand set a new Pac-12 Championship record, swimming a 1:37.81, just .12 seconds behind his NCAA and overall Pac-12 record. 
  • Marchand earned yet another Sun Devil program record, moving into second place in the event, trumping his previous top-2 record.
  • Cal’s Hugo Gonzalez took home second place with a time of 1:38.72 and a new personal best. Finishing with the second-best time in the country this season, Gonzalez now sits at both third and fourth in the Cal record book.
  • Rounding out the event was third place finisher Ron Polonsky of Stanford. Swimming a 1:40.42, Polonsky tied for third fastest time in the country this season.

50 Freestyle

  • In a close finish of only .05 seconds, ASU’s Jack Dolan took home first, beating out 2022 Champion Bjorn Seelinger in the process. 
  • The 18.86 finish is the third-highest in the country this season and a personal best for the senior, who now holds nine of Arizona State’s top-10 times in the event.
  • Seelinger, the reigning 2022 Champion, took a close second place with a time of 18.91 with Stanford’s Andrei Minakov swimming a 19.07 and picking up third. 

200 Free Relay

  • Cal’s Bjorn Seelinger, Jack Alexy, Destin Lasco and Gabriel Jett finished first, making the Golden Bears the now seven-time Champion of the 200 Free Relay, with Seelinger, picking up his third consecutive win and Alexy picking up his second.
  • Swimming a collective 1:15.40, the team swam the fifth-fastest time in the country this season.
  • ASU’s Jack Dolan, Jonny Kulow, Max McCusker and Grant House earned a close second, finishing with a 1:15.75, the fourth-fastest in Sun Devil history. 
  • Arizona earned their second podium finish of the Championship with Tommy Palmer, Marin Ercegovic, Seth Miller and Ryan Perham swimming a 1:15.97 and an Arizona program record.
