Horner, McDivitt, Petersen, Ungur Heading for NCAA Championships for Swim & Dive

Mar 20, 2023

SALT LAKE CITY – The 2023 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships are set to begin on Wednesday in Minneapolis, Minn., and will continue through Saturday and Jaek Horner, Luke McDivitt, Elias Petersen and Andrei Ungur from the University of Utah men's swimming and diving team will be among those competing for National Champion and All-American status.

On The Boards
McDivitt and Petersen are just a couple weeks removed from competing at the NCAA Diving Zone E Championships, where both earned the chance to compete in multiple events at nationals.

Petersen spent the event's second day piling up over 700 points between the preliminary round and the final in the 3m, good enough to place him third and lock down spots at the NCAA Championships in both the 1m and 3m. He'll be attempting to add to a list of accomplishments that already includes a pair of Pac-12 Championships medals and Utah's best-ever score in the 1m, all accolades Petersen has achieved during his first season as a Ute.

McDivitt also picked up some hardware at the Pac-12 Diving Championships, placing third in the men's platform, then earning spots in all three diving events in Minneapolis with an excellent showing at zones. On the final day of the competition, he posted a score of 335.65 on the platform that moved him into third and ensured he'd be diving from all three heights at the NCAA Championships. McDivitt, who was an All-American on the platform in 2020 and 2021, will have the chance to become only the second Utah diver ever to be named an All-American three times.

In The Pool
After a year of setting and resetting program records in the pool, Ungur and Horner will both be competing in three races in Minneapolis. They will each have the chance to become the first Utes since Rahiti De Vos in 2020 to earn All-American honors in multiple individual swimming events.

Ungur's mark of 45.00 in the 100 back not only earned him a medal at the Pac-12 Championships and broke his own program record but also stands as ninth-fastest in the country, making him a shoo-in for a place at nationals. Ungur's accomplishments at the Pac-12 Championships included posting a program record in the 200 backstroke at 1:41.03 and it was that time that sent him on to the NCAA Championships, as did a mark of 19.80 in the 50 free.

Horner earned an invite in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:45.08 that he recorded at the Big Al Invitational in December, which also stands as the third-fastest mark in Utah history. Horner broke the program record in the 100 and 200 breaststroke during the 2023 season, clocking in at 51.78 in the former event and 1:53.85 in the latter and both marks were good enough to garner him an invite to Minneapolis.
