Rowing has three boats advance to Sunday's A Final at the San Diego Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO – The Washington State women's rowing team had a strong start at the 50th San Diego Crew Classic Saturday, April 1, as the Cougars had three of their four boats advance to the A finals in their respective races.

WSU will have a fair amount of representation in the A finals at the San Diego Crew Classic this Sunday, April 2, as Washington State's varsity 4+, second varsity 8+, and third varsity 8+ boats each advanced to the regatta's trophy stage. Meanwhile, the Cougars' first varsity 8+ crew will compete in the B finals at Mission Bay this Sunday.

"It was great to go out there and get the first race under our belt," said WSU Women's Rowing Head Coach Jane LaRiviere. "We learned a lot today and are excited to get another crack down the track tomorrow. There is lots of speed to be gained over the next few weeks and it starts tomorrow."

The Cougars' varsity 4+ crew was the first to punch their ticket into an A final, as Washington State finished fourth in the second heat of the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup race. The Cougs clocked in at 8:02.041 in Saturday's race and will row in lane eight in Sunday's V4+ A final, which is set for 10:28 a.m. PT.

Washington State's second varsity 8+ boat clocked in at 7:13.197 to finish third in the second heat of the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy. The Cougars move onto Sunday's 2V8+ A final, scheduled for 10:35 a.m. PT at Mission Bay.

WSU's 3V8+ crew also advanced to an A final, as the Cougars captured third place in the second heat of the Carley Copley Cup with a time of 7:30.578. Washington State will open Sunday's A final of the Carley Copley Cup in lane six. The 3V8+ A final is set for 12:10 p.m. PT.

The first varsity 8+ boat opened the San Diego Crew Classic for the Cougars by taking fourth in the second heat of the Jessop-Whittier Cup. Washington State finished the race in 6:55.529. The Cougs' 1V8+ crew will compete against Notre Dame in the B Final of the Jessop-Whittier Cup, this Sunday at 10:56 a.m. PT.
