STANFORD, Calif. - The second day of the 2023 Beach Volleyball Championship took an unexpected turn from yesterday with two big upsets to kick off the day.
No. 3 seed CALIFORNIA defeated No. 2 seed USC in a close 3-2 victory after dropping their one regular-season matchup. In the next contest, host and No. 4 seed STANFORD defeated No. 1 UCLA for the first time in program history. These battles punched the Golden Bears' and the Cardinals' ticket to the final day of competition where they will kick off the day at 9am PT as the lone survivors in the winners bracket.
No. 5 seed WASHINGTON eliminated No. 9 seed UTAH followed by a rivalry matchup that saw No. 6 seed ARIZONA defeat No. 7 seed ARIZONA STATE to stay alive. Both No. 2 USC and No. 1 UCLA then bounced back to eliminate No. 5 WASHINGTON and No. 6 ARIZONA, and give themselves a chance to compete against each other tomorrow at 10:45am PT in the contenders bracket.
The championship match will be played at 4 p.m tomorrow in two flights, starting with pairs two and four, followed by pairs one, three, and five.
