Washington Adds Three Veteran Transfers to 2023-24 Roster

May 2, 2023

SEATTLE – Washington officially signed a trio of grad transfers to its 2023-24 roster, Head Coach Mike Hopkins announced.

Sahvir Wheeler (Kentucky), Anthony Holland (Fresno State) and Moses Wood (Portland) bring a combined twelve years of collegiate experience to Seattle.

Wheeler, a 5'9" guard from Houston, Texas, led the SEC in assists in 2020-21 and 2021-22. He was a finalist for the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award in 2022. One of the best facilitators in the country, Wheeler has ranked among the top-five Division I guards in assists in two of the past three seasons. He averaged a career-best 7.4 assists per game as a sophomore at Georgia and his career average of 6.2 assists per game ranks eighth in SEC history. Wheeler played alongside All-Pac-12 forward Keion Brooks Jr. at Kentucky.

"Sahvir is a proven winner and a high-level facilitator who makes everyone around him better," Hopkins said of Wheeler. "He is one of the elite point guards in the country and we are excited for him to make an immediate impact on our team as an experienced playmaker and leader."

Holland, a 6'5" guard from Riverside, Calif., played four seasons at Fresno State, averaging over 24.0 minutes per game in each season. He became a full-time starter as a sophomore and averaged 9.6 points and 6.2 rebounds as a junior for the Bulldogs. Holland reunites with Husky center Braxton Meah, his former teammate of two years. The two battled as opponents last year in the Wooden Legacy semifinals as the Huskies went on to win the tournament.

"Anthony is a skilled shooter with a unique ability to defend," said Coach Hopkins. "He is a tough defender who can guard all five positions and can also shoot the basketball extremely well, which will help our team on both ends of the floor."

Wood, a 6'8" forward from Reno, Nev., started 29 games for Portland in 2022-23, averaging 15.3 points and a team-high 6.3 rebounds per game. He earned All-WCC honors following the season and scored 912 points in just two seasons with the Pilots, shooting 46 percent and 42 percent from three. Wood previously played for UNLV and Tulane as an important reserve for each. His father, Spokane native David Wood, played seven seasons in the NBA.

"With Moses we are getting a dynamic offensive player with a high basketball IQ," Hopkins said of Wood. "He is an All-WCC player and a proven scorer and rebounder. His elite three-point shooting, ability to score off the bounce and high-level defending will make an immediate impact on our program."

The three grad transfers join four-star recruit Wesley Yates and local recruit Christian King to make up the current incoming class.
