Oregon staves off Arizona to win Pac-12 Baseball Tournament Championship

May 28, 2023

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Freshman Turner Spoljaric and relievers Austin Anderson and Matt Dallas combined to hold Arizona's potent offense to just three earned runs in a 5-4 Oregon win in the Pac-12 Conference Tournament championship game on Saturday at Scottsdale Stadium.

Spoljaric (6-0), Anderson and Dallas kept a Wildcat offense that averaged 13 runs per game in its three tournament wins in check most of the night. Spoljaric allowed just three runs, two earned, over 6.0 inning pitched on seven hits while fanning three without a walk.

Anderson came out of the bullpen to toss a scoreless seventh inning before turning it over to Dallas who tossed the final two innings giving up a run on a solo home run in the eighth, before pitching a scoreless ninth. The game ended when Dallas got tournament MVP Chase Davis to fly out to Bryce Boettcher in left field.

How It Happened: Arizona took the early lead with a run in the third, but Oregon answered in its half of the inning. After Rikuu Nishida reached on a hard-hit shot at the third baseman that was ruled an error, the Ducks' right fielder swiped second and came around to score on a Colby Shade two-out single.

The Ducks took the lead in the bottom of the fourth, scoring a pair of runs with two outs. Drew Smith and Jacob Walsh reached with back-to-back one-out singles moving Smith to third. After a second out, Gavin Grant singled to right field to drive in Smith and move Walsh to third. Nishida followed with a high chopper over the pitcher's head that he beat out allowing Walsh to score for a 3-1 lead.

Arizona tied the game with single runs in the fifth and sixth, but Walsh responded with a tape-measure home run to right center in the bottom of the sixth to put Oregon back on top by one.

The Wildcats (33-24) threatened in the seventh loading the bases with two outs against Anderson, but the Roseburg, Ore., native fanned Arizona cleanup hitter Kiko Romero to end the threat.

Oregon (37-20) added an insurance run it would need in the bottom of the seventh. After Drew Cowley and Sabin Ceballos reached on back-to-back hit-by-pitches, senior Tanner Smith singled to center scoring Cowley to provide some cushion.

All-Tournament Team: Oregon had four players named to the Pac-12 Conference All-Tournament Team. Catcher Bennett Thompson, third baseman Sabin Ceballos, center fielder Colby Shade and pitcher Grayson Grinsell were all on the 11-man team.

Box Score Notes: The Ducks' bullpen allowed just three runs in 24.1 innings of work (1.11 ERA) in the Pac-12 Conference Tournament … Freshman Drew Smith extended his hitting streak to a school-record 19 games with a second-inning single, breaking the record previously held by Spencer Steer … Smith has at least one hit in all 18 of his starts, 10 of those multi-hit games … Spoljaric (6.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K) had his second quality start in his last three outings … Dallas recorded his third save of the season … Walsh's home run was his 14th of the season, moving him into a tie for fourth on the single-season list … It was also his 20th career dinger, good for a tie for 10th with Cowley on the career list.

On Deck: The NCAA Tournament selection show is Monday at 9 a.m. on ESPN2 and the ESPN app. The Ducks earned the conference's automatic bid into Regionals with the Pac-12 Tournament title.
