In The Polls
UCLA enters the 2024 campaign ranked in four of five major national polls. The Bruins peaked as high as No. 18 (Perfect Game) while also checking in at No. 22 (D1Baseball, NCBWA) and No. 24 (Baseball America).

Jewett Draws Opening Day Start
Junior right-hander Luke Jewett, who has been a key piece of the Bruin bullpen over the last two seasons, has been tabbed as the Opening Day starter by Coach Savage. Jewett becomes the first UCLA pitcher to have his first collegiate start come on Opening Day since James Kaprielian in 2014. A JSerra High School product, Jewett led the Pac-12 with 35 appearances as a freshman in 2022, and served as the team's closer in 2023 before absorbing a season-ending injury in early April. He fashioned a 3.68 ERA as a freshman, and led UCLA with a 21-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 2023.

Gourson Draws Preseason Buzz
UCLA junior infielder Duce Gourson received the most preseason acclaim of any Bruin this winter. He was tabbed a Preseason All-American by Perfect Game (Second Team) and Baseball America (Third Team), was selected to the Pac-12 Preseason All-Conference Team, and ranked No. 4 on D1Baseball's preseason power rankings for second basemen. Gourson (.319/.438/.515, 10 HR, 48 RBIs) led UCLA in nearly every offensive category a season ago, earning an invite to the United States Collegiate National Team over the summer.

UCLA Imports the No. 1-Ranked Recruit Class
The freshman class on this year's Bruin squad was ranked the No. 1 recruit class in the country by Baseball America, marking the second time in three years that UCLA has brought in the top-ranked class in the country. More broadly, UCLA has signed a top-10 class in 12 of the last 18 years under John Savage, including eight groups that garnered top-five status. Infielder Roch Cholowsky was the highest-ranked high school position player in the country to make it to campus from Baseball America's draft rankings. Other ranked players to make it to Westwood included Grant Gray, Justin Lee, Phoenix Call, Cameron Kim, Dean West, and Luke Rodriguez.

Bruin Trio Named to Preseason All-Pac-12 Team
Junior infielder Duce Gourson, junior right-hander Luke Jewett, and junior infielder Cody Schrier were all named to the 2024 Preseason Pac-12 All-Conference Team. Both Schrier and Jewett repeated as preseason all-league picks after being selected as sophomore ahead of the 2023 campaign.

Ruff Selected to Stopper of the Year Watch List
UCLA closer and grad transfer Rashad Ruff was named to the 2024 NCBWA Preseason Stopper of the Year Watch List ahead of the new campaign. The award honors the top relief pitcher in college baseball. UCLA has had two pitchers win the award a total of three times in David Berg (2013, 2015) and Holden Powell (2019). Berg remains the lone pitcher to win the award multiple times. Ruff is coming off a strong senior season at Coppin State, where he had five saves, a 3.82 ERA, and an 11.2 K/9 ratio in 33 innings as the team's primary closer.

The All-Time Series Against Gonzaga
UCLA leads the all-time series against Gonzaga, 19-6. This weekend marks the first meeting between the two schools since the Minnesota Regional in 2018, and the first meeting in the regular season since 2017. Under John Savage, the Bruins hold a 6-2 record against Gonzaga. UCLA took two-of-three from the Bulldogs at home in both 2015 and 2017, and defeated No. 3-seeded Gonzaga twice in as many tries to eliminate them from the 2018 Minnesota Regional. Every matchup in the head-to-head series, barring the 2018 Regional meeting, has taken place in Los Angeles.

  • Shortstop: Cody Schrier (No. 12)
