Mar 11, 2024

ST. MARY'S, Md. - The Cardinal claimed two more team race victories this weekend, topping the field at both the St. Mary's Team Race and the Bob Bavier Team Race. The wins made it six straight victories for the Cardinal to start the spring season.

In Maryland, Stanford won 18 of 21 races and finished with a record of 18-3, one better than runner up Roger Williams at 17-4. The Naval Academy rounded out the top three with a 15-6 record.

"First real test of a young team and they proved they were capable in very tricky current conditions," said the Malin Burnham Assistant Sailing Coach Augie Dale.

The Cardinal was led by skippers Michelle Lahrkamp, Thomas Sitzmann, and Vanessa Lahrkamp throughout the weekend, with Ellie Harned, Alice Schmid, and Gwendolyn Donahue controlling the crew duties.

Among Stanford's 18 race victories at St. Mary's were five 1-2-3 sweeps.

Meanwhile, in Charleston, S.C., the Cardinal added another decisive win, dropping only one race and finishing with an 8-1 record.

"The team's communication and chemistry got better together with each race," said assistant coach Shawn Harvey. "We're in a good spot for it being early in the season."

The field at the Bob Bavier included the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, College of Charleston, and Harvard who finished in second, third, and fourth respectively.

The Cardinal was led by Luke Woodworth, Sophie Fisher, and Reade Decker as skippers during the regatta while Shay Wood, Grace Austin, and Alexis Young served as crews.

Stanford will have the following weekend off before returning to action in the PCCSC South Designate and the Friis Trophy.
