PAUMA VALLEY – Freshman Ethan Fang carded back-to-back 70s to pace the No. 18 California men's golf team across 36 holes played at the Pauma Valley Invitational on Monday. The Golden Bears are in ninth place after shooting 288-285 (573, +5) on the first day at Pauma Valley Country Club.
The top five teams in the field are 6-under-par or better, led by Vanderbilt (-15) and Oklahoma State (-12).
Fang – who has already earned a pair of top-10 finishes this spring – sits just outside of the top 10 after 36 holes in a tie for 12th at 2-under-par (140). The freshman played bogey-free golf over his final 23 holes of the day and will enter Tuesday six shots off Oklahoma State's Jonas Baumgartner (-8) for the individual lead. Kuangyu (Tony) Chen (T30th, +1) posted Cal's lowest 18-hole score of the day with a second-round 69; three straight birdies on holes 12-14 were sandwiched by bogeys on 11 and 15, but the redshirt junior closed out his round with a fourth birdie on hole 6.
