Huskies Win Series Opener, 5-4

SEATTLE – No. 8 Washington opened the series with Oregon State with a walk-off 5-4 win courtesy of Kinsey Fiedler on Thursday night at Husky Softball Stadium.
 
The Huskies improve to 23-5 and 7-3 in Pac-12 action.
 
Ruby Meylan got the start in the circle, going 4.2 innings with four strikeouts and a pair of walks. Sidne Peters came on in relief to pick up the win after tossing the final 2.1 frames with four strikeouts and two walks to improve to 4-0 on the season.
 
The Huskies got their bats going early, bringing across four runs in the first. Rylee Holtorf led off with her fourth home run of the season. Back-to-back hits from Avery Hobson and Jillian Celis brought up Alana Johnson who smashed her team-leading ninth home run of the season to make it a 4-0 game.

 
Oregon State cut the lead to one on a bases loaded double from Kiki Escobar. The Beavers tied the game at four in the third on an RBI single by Paige Doerr.
 
After a scoreless fourth, the game then entered a 27-minute rain delay with two outs in the top of the fifth.
 
In the seventh, Hobson led off with a walk and advanced to second on a groundout. Fiedler knocked in the game-winning run on a double out to left center to secure the 5-4 series-opening victory.

 
Washington and Oregon State square off in game two tomorrow (Friday) night. First pitch from Husky Softball Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m. and airing on the Washington Live Stream. Audio will also be available on GoHuskies.com.
