Rowing Advances to Sunday Finals at Day Two of San Diego Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (April 6, 2024) – The Washington State women's rowing team had a strong day on the water with a pair of second place finishes and a third-place finish to advance to the Sunday finals in all three events.

In their first race of the morning, the Cougar varsity eight finished in second with a time of 6:48.27 behind the University of Washington (6:37.92) and in front of Southern Methodist (7:04.64). The teams remained close, keeping around a boat's length between each other for most of the race before Washington pulled away from WSU in the final 200 meters, while the Cougs were able to pull away from SMU.

The second race of the day for Washington State was the varsity four, in which the Cougs finished in third place with a time of 7:56.84. WSU followed behind Stanford who came in second (7:44.65), and Texas who took off from the start to finish in first by 15 seconds in 7:29.35.

Washington State's second varsity eight crew collected a second-place victory to end its day. The Cougar women, with a time of 7:08.06, crossed the finish behind Washington (6:56.05) and just ahead of SMU (7:13.65). While the Cougs were in the middle of the pack for most of the race, their push toward the end kept them ahead of SMU to secure a second-place finish.

The Cougs will continue at the San Diego Crew Classic tomorrow, Sunday, April 7 to race in the grand finals in the 1V8 at 9:30 a.m., the 1V4 at 10:06 a.m., and the 2V8 at 10:14 a.m. at Mission Bay in San Diego, California.
