Jakubcik Wins First College Title at Western Intercollegiate

Apr 17, 2024

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Sophomore Filip Jakubcik of No. 8 Arizona Men's Golf picked one of the toughest events in college golf to pick up his first collegiate victory, winning the Western Intercollegiate on Wednesday. Jakubcik clinched his individual title by a single stroke with a final score of 4-under par. He was the only Wildcat to break par after 54 holes to pace his team to a fifth-place finish at 16-over. The sophomore entered the final round with a one-shot lead and back-to-back birdies on the 15th and 16th holes proved to be difference in the win.

"I was pretty nervous coming down the stretch on the last couple holes, but having a three-putt to win really calmed me down," Jakubcik said. "This win definitely boosts my confidence, but at the end of the day, it's like nothing happened. I just have to get right back to practice. It was great to have my teammates and coaches with me on that last hole. This team is amazing, and we all support each other. Coach Jim and Coach Matt are behind us every day."

Jakubcik had been working towards an individual title this season with a third-place performance at the Sahalee Players Championship in October. His first career top-five finish came in his freshman season at the Folds of Honor Collegiate in just his second tournament as a Wildcat.

The Wildcats got a second top-25 finish this week at Pasatiempo Golf Club from sophomore Zach Pollo who ended his week at 4-over par and in a tie for 25th. He and Jakubcik led the way for Arizona's strong finish in its final four holes of the tournament, carding nine total birdies. The duo also helped the program to its best team finish at the Western Intercollegiate in eight trips.

Arizona Men's Golf's week in Santa Cruz, California caps its regular season schedule with the Pac-12 Championships on the horizon. This year's conference championship will be held at Desert Forest Golf Club in Carefree, Arizona and is scheduled to begin on Friday, April 26.
