Apr 19, 2024

SALT LAKE CITY – The No. 23 UCLA men's tennis team beat Utah by a score of 4-0 in Pac-12 Conference action Friday at George S. Eccles Tennis Center. The sweep was UCLA's second of the season.

UCLA (13-6, 5-2 Pac-12) earned its sixth victory in a row. Giacomo Revelli clinched the overall result – with a 7-5, 7-5 win in straight sets on court four. Two other Bruins also won in singles play as Alexander Hoogmartens and Jorge Plans Gonzalez also won in straight sets on Friday.  Utah (3-18, 0-7) never led, but did earn a doubles win on Court 3.

To begin the day, the Bruins earned the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. Spencer Johnson and Emon van Loben Sels kicked things off with a win on the top court for the second match in a row, this time a 6-4 decision over Geronimo Espin Busleiman and Bruno Krenn. Utah then evened doubles play with a 6-3 win on Court 3, before the Bruins earned the doubles point in dramatic fashion.

Just like they did on Tuesday at home against USC, Hoogmartens and Govind Nanda entered extra time with their doubles match tied at 6-6. The duo then earned a 7-3 win in extra time to earn the doubles point for the Bruins. The win was Hoogmartens' and Nanda's eighth win in a row as a pairing.

With a 1-0 lead heading into singles play, the Bruins earned three straight sets wins to claim the win on Friday, as Plans Gonzalez, Hoogsmartens and Revelli all were victorious in their singles matches.

Hoogmartens got things started in dominant fashion, as the junior only dropped two games in the entire match en route to a 6-0, 6-2 win on court three, giving UCLA a 2-0 lead.

Plans Gonzalez followed shortly on Court 6, earning his ninth singles win of the spring with a 6-2, 6-2 win in straight sets. Plans Gonzalez has now won four of his last six matches in straight sets.

Revelli clinched the match for UCLA on Court 4. The junior from London, England, continued the trend of winning in straight sets, winning his match 7-5, 7-5 to earn the Bruins the 4-0 sweep of Utah.
