No. 8 Softball Secures Series-Opening Win Over No. 20 Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. – No. 8 Washington opened the series at No. 20 Cal with an 8-3 win on Friday afternoon at Levine-Fricke Field. The Huskies improve to 29-7 and 11-5 Pac-12 on the season.
 
Ruby Meylan got the start in the circle going the distance with seven strikeouts to pick up her ninth win.
 
Rylee Holtorf, Brooke Nelson and Kinsey Fiedler led the way with a pair of hits each. Six different Huskies brought in a run. The Husky offense was also able to draw seven walks, led by Holtorf and Nelson with two each.
 
Cal brought across the first runs of the games on a two-run home run by Tianna Bell in the second.
 
Washington answered right back bringing in four runs in the third to take the lead. Holtorf led off with her fourth home run in three games. She has also homered six times in the last seven games. The Huskies have hit a home run in nine straight games.

 
With Avery Hobson on second a single by Nelson allowed Hobson to score on heads up base running to tie the game. A couple batters later, Nelson scored on a Golden Bear throwing error. Jillian Celis brought in the fourth run on a sacrifice fly.

 
Washington added a run in the fifth on a Sydney Stewart RBI double.

 
Cal answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning to make it a two-run game.
 
With runners on second and third in the sixth, a groundout brought in Holtorf to extend the lead to three. The Huskies tacked on two more runs in the seventh to bring the score to its final, 8-3.
 
The Huskies and Golden Bears face off in game two Saturday afternoon. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. and streaming on Cal Live Stream 5.
