Swift Start for No. 10 Water Polo Contributes to 10-8 Victory Over No. 12 Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, IND. – To cap off the MPSF Conference Championships, No. 10 Sun Devil Water Polo got off to a swift start and never looked back with an 10-8 victory over the No. 12 Hoosiers Sunday Morning, with goals coming from six different players for fifth place.

Millie Quin scored a game-high four goals in the victory. She obtained her 15th hat trick of the year and also scored her 100th career goal in the win. Zoe Frangieh's two goals mark the sixth multi-goal game of the season.

Sanne Keijzer was relentless in the cage, accounting for 14 saves in the game. Making it the seventh time this season she's had 10 or more saves in a contest. In the first matchup against the Hoosiers, she had 11 saves.

The win is also the team's 23rd win of the year, the second most in program history. The Sun Devils have now won 18 of the last 21 matchups against Indiana. The team will now await their fate on whether they'll be selected for the NCAA Tournament on Monday at 5 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Indiana managed the game's first goal to take an early 1-0 lead at the 6:27 mark of the opening quarter. Still, the Sun Devils scored five unanswered goals by Zoe Frangieh, Millie Quin, Lara Kiss, Sophie Shorter-Robinson and Ashley Ferguson, contributing to the fast start. 
  • Quin continued the scoring run to open the second quarter by netting her second goal at the 6:10 mark to extend the Sun Devil lead to 6-1. Indiana would score three minutes later to cut their deficit to four. Olivé-Martí added another goal for the Sun Devils before the end of the half, holding a 7-3 lead.
  • The Sun Devils scored the first two goals of the half led by Quin scoring a hat-trick and Frangieh netting her second goal of the game to extend the ASU lead to six halfway through the third frame. 
  • Indiana would add a goal late in the quarter to give ASU a 9-4 lead into the fourth frame. Then, they would open the fourth with another goal to make it 9-5.
  • Quin then responded with her fourth goal of the game to bring the ASU lead back to five, making it 10-5. The Hoosiers scored three goals late in the fourth quarter, but the Sun Devils managed the comeback attempt and emerged victorious.
