McCarthy Named Pac-12 Midfielder of the Year

Apr 30, 2024

EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon lacrosse student-athlete Morgan McCarthy was recognized as the top midfielder in the Pac-12 Conference on Tuesday afternoon, being named the Midfielder of the Year as the league announced its annual postseason awards.

McCarthy becomes the second Duck to earn a major Pac-12 postseason honor, joining Rachel Hall who won the freshman of the year award in 2019. The midfielder was also named to the all-conference second team for the third straight season, making her the first player in program history to make three all-Pac-12 teams in a career.

McCarthy has had a sensational season for the Ducks once again as a senior, scoring a career-high 42 goals and ranking third in the league with a goals-per-game average of 3.0. The do-it-all midfielder is one of just eight players nationally – and the only in the Pac-12 – with 40-plus goals, 30-plus draw controls and 15-plus caused turnovers in 2024.

The Pawling, N.Y., native leads Oregon in points (48), goals (42), shots on goal (63) and ground balls (26) while ranking second on the team with 17 caused turnovers. Her goal total is tied for the seventh most in UO single-season history, while her goals per game average is tied for second.

McCarthy also eclipsed several career milestones this season, becoming the 11th Duck in program history to reach 100 career goals. The midfielder also joined the Pac-12's top-10 all-time leading goalscorers with a five-goal performance against Arizona State on April 20, currently ranking 10th with 119 in her career.

Oregon earned the fifth seed in this year's Pac-12 Tournament over the weekend and is preparing for its matchup with Arizona State in the quarterfinal on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. PT. The Ducks defeated the Sun Devils, 20-12, in their regular season meeting in Eugene behind five goals from both McCarthy and Anna Simmons. This year's tournament is being held in Los Angeles at the LA Memorial Coliseum and will be broadcast across Pac-12 Networks.
