No. 4 Cal Set To Host Big Row

May 2, 2024
The Big Row will be the final tune up before the Bears compete at the Pac-12 Championships on May 19.

BERKELEY – The No. 4 California men's rowing team will face off against No. 12 Stanford in the 89th edition of the Big Row on Saturday at Redwood Shores in Redwood City. The Bears own a 70-19 record in the series and have won nine straight matchups. Last year, Cal swept both the first and second varsity races.

"These races are very important in terms of building momentum and building belief and building speed," Cal head coach Scott Frandsen said. "It's an important set of races for the guys to go out and execute the race plans as we prepare for the Pac-12 and IRA Championships."

The Bears will race their first and second varsity eights against Stanford before their third varsity eight goes up against their freshmen eight in an exhibition.

Cal is coming off a dual with then-No. 7 Washington where the Bears' freshmen 8+ notched the sole victory of the day.

"No matter what the result against Washington was going to be, either way we were going to get back to work and try to find speed through training and through different lineups," said Frandsen. "So that has been the message and that has been the process that we've been going through over the last 10 or 11 days. I think the response and the emotional durability of the group has been really good."

All races will be live streamed here.

These will be the last set of races before the team prepares for the Pac-12 Championships on May 19 at Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif.
