Washington Drops Series Opener

SALT LAKE CITY – In a back-and-forth battle, No. 9 Washington dropped the series opener against Utah 5-4 on Friday night.

The Huskies move to 31-11 (13-9 Pac-12) on the season.
 
Ruby Meylan (9-8) got the start, tossing 4.1 innings with three walks, three strikeouts and five runs - three earned. Sidne Peters came on in relief, throwing the final 1.2 innings with no hits allowed and two strikeouts.
 
With bases loaded and two outs in the second, Brooklyn Carter hit a ball that landed just along the left field line to plate a pair of runs to give the Huskies the lead.
 
Carter recorded her 20th stolen base on the season in the fourth inning. She has stolen 43 consecutive bases dating back to last season.
 
Utah tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of unearned runs.
 
Brooke Nelson gave the Huskies the lead once again with her 12th home run of the season for the 3-2 advantage. It is Nelson's eight home run since the beginning of April.
 

 
Utah responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 5-3 lead.
 
Down to the final three outs, Rylee Holtorf led off with a first pitch home run to make it a one run game. The Huskies were able to get the tying run on but couldn't bring in the run.
 

 
Carter, Sydney Stewart and Nelson recorded multi-hit games. Stewart has reached base in 14 consecutive games.
 
With the two home runs tonight, the Huskies have hit a home run in 14 of the last 15 games. Washington has 29 homers over that span.
 
The Huskies and Utes face off in game two Saturday afternoon. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. PT and airing on Pac-12 Washington and Pac-12 Mountain.
