Women's Tennis Beats Texas Tech to Earn NCAA Super-Regional Spot

Kimmi Hance

LOS ANGELES – The eighth-seeded UCLA women's tennis team picked up its second 4-0 win of the NCAA Championships first and second rounds at Los Angeles Tennis Center, blanking Texas Tech Saturday to earn a super-regional spot.

The Bruins (20-5) were led by Elise Wagle, who registered her team-leading eighth clinching victory to go along with a deciding doubles win. Kimmi Hance and Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer were also triumphant in singles action. The Lady Raiders, ranked No. 25 by the ITA going into NCAA Championships play, finished their season with a 20-9 record.

UCLA's doubles tandem of Ahmani Guichard and Sasha Vagramov had its initial serve broken by Andreea Lila/Jermine Sherif on Court 3, but immediately answered with a break of its own. After alternating again, Guichard/Vagramov earned the difference maker for 5-4 and held serve in the ensuing game. The Bruin duo has won four matches in a row since being reunited April 25.

The top-court matchup stayed on serve until No. 13 Wagle/Tian Fangran broke No. 5 Matka Komac/Avelina Sayfetdinova for 4-2. The Lady Raiders got the contest back on serve with a break for 4-5, but Tian/Wagle picked up another one its own to win 6-4. Tian/Wagle has now won both of its matches played against top-five pairs this season.

Lutkemeyer collected her team-high 19th singles victory to make the lead 2-0. The most recent came in a 6-1, 6-2 display versus Lila on Court 5.

No. 27 Hance was next to finish, getting the best of Sayfetdinova in a 6-4, 6-1 performance on Court 2. Hance also beat Sayfetdinova in the programs' 2023 NCAA first-round match at Duke's Ambler Tennis Stadium. The Bruins prevailed in that one 4-1.

Wagle's latest deciding point came opposite Matka Komac on Court 4. The Bruin was dominant in a first-set tiebreaker and carried that to a 7-6(1), 6-3 result. The clinching win was Wagle's first in NCAA Championships competition.

As a top-eight seed, UCLA will also host the super-regional round. Date, time and opponent will be determined at the conclusion of second-round contests.
