Six-Run Sixth Sinks Stanford

TUCSON, Ariz. – Leading 2-1 headed to the bottom of the sixth on Sunday, Stanford allowed six runs in the sixth inning, ultimately falling 7-2 at No. 21 Arizona. With the victory, the Wildcats (29-17, 17-7 Pac-12) swept the Cardinal (20-25, 11-13 Pac-12) in a three-game Pac-12 series from Hi Corbett Field.

Five of the six runs tagged to the Cardinal in the sixth went unearned as Arizona took advantage of an error charged to junior shortstop Trevor Haskins. The inning was highlighted by a two-RBI double from Andrew Cain and a bases-clearing three-RBI double from Brendan Summerhill.

Stanford got on the board first on Sunday afternoon, plating a pair of runs in the first inning on singles from Brandon Larson and Brady Reynolds. Sophomore Malcolm Moore had led off the inning with a double to right field.

Sophomore Nick Dugan pitched effectively in the start for Stanford, tossing five innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts. The right-hander, who dropped to 3-4 on the season, allowed a single run in the fourth to cut Stanford's lead to 2-1 to that point before being charged with two runs (one earned) in the six-run sixth.

After allowing the six runs, Stanford had a chance to respond immediately in the seventh, loading the bases with two outs for Moore, but Arizona starter Cam Walty induced a fly ball to left field to escape the jam and strand all three.

Walty, who worked seven innings and allowed two runs on nine hits and a walk with three strikeouts, earned the victory and improved to 7-1 on the season.

Stanford will return home next week, hosting Arizona State in the final home weekend series of the year. Sunday's finale vs. the Sun Devils will be Senior Day.

• Ethan Hott (2-for-4) has hit safely in seven straight games ... is batting .375 (30-for-80) with 12 runs scored, six doubles and seven RBIs in Pac-12 play.
• Cort MacDonald (1-for-3, BB) has hit safely in 11 of his last 13, 19 of his last 22, and 25 of his last 29, and has reached in all but five of his games played this year.
