Bears Walk It Off In Extras For 30th Win

May 11, 2024

BERKELEY – The California baseball team collected its 30th win of the season Saturday afternoon defeating San Jose State 7-4 in walk-off fashion. PJ Moutzouridis collected a walk-off single in the 11th inning and aggressive base running by Seth Gwynn aided by a Spartan error granted the Golden Bears the series win.

For the first time since 2019 the Bears (30-17) have reached 30 wins, and they have their bullpen to thank for their latest victory. Tom Mayer entered in the fifth and tossed 2.1 innings of scoreless, two-hit ball and Tyler Stasiowski (4-1) picked up the win tossing the final 4.1 innings. Stasiowski allowed just two hits, struck out seven and hung five zeros on the board to continuously give his offense chances to win the game.

As they did yesterday, the Bears struck first in the first inning with Gwynn collecting a two-out single to center field to drive in Rodney Green Jr. from second base. San Jose State (19-30) found its first run of the game in the third inning to tie it at 1-1.

A bit of small ball helped the Bears retake the lead in the fourth inning with Moutzouridis notching a two-out single to right center and stealing second a few pitches later. Jag Burden brought him home on an RBI double to make it 2-1.

The Spartans scored a pair in the top of the fifth to take their first lead of the series 3-2, but that lead lasted all of five at-bats as Green Jr. crushed a solo shot over the right field wall, his 13th of the year. Green Jr. finished 2-for-5 with two runs.

From there the game grew quiet with the Bears going hitless for five straight innings and the combo of Mayer and Stasiowski keeping the Spartan offense at bay. The two bullpen pitchers stranded six on base and combined for 10 strikeouts.

In the bottom of the 11th, Gwynn got aboard with a one-out single to left field and promptly stole second to get into scoring position. With two outs on the board Moutzouridis stepped to the plate and the freshman did not disappoint slapping a single down the third base line that San Jose State third baseman Nathan Cadena was forced to chase down. Cadena kept the ball in the infield but by the time he corralled it, his only play was at home where Gwynn was heading quickly. His throw to the plate was on time but skipped in the dirt and Gwynn slid in for the win.

Moutzouridis finished 2-for-5 with a run and a stolen base and Gwynn added a 2-for-4 performance with a walk.

While this game was going on, the Bears secured a spot in the Pac-12 Tournament with USC defeating Washington State 9-4.
