Baseball's Nick McLain Earns Back-to-Back Pac-12 Player of the Week Honors

May 13, 2024

Nick McLain goes back-to-back as the Pac-12 Player of the Week with his stellar play throughout Arizona State's first sweep at Stanford since 2016. Last week, he won not only the conference honors, but was also named the national player of the week by D1Baseball, NCAA Baseball, and the NCBWA. It's the third week in a row that a Sun Devil has earned the Pac-12 honor.

The switch-hitter has hit an outstanding eight home runs in the last nine games, adding one as a lefty and two batting right-handed this weekend. Throughout the four games this week, McLain upped his batting average from .591 last week to .611 this week on 11-of-18 hitting. With the addition of three walks and only one strikeout, his on-base percentage was a blistering .667.

In each game of the series at Stanford, the redshirt sophomore had three or more hits and added two doubles to his three home runs for a 1.222 slugging percentage and six runs. On Sunday, he had four hits while ASU scored 16 runs at the Sunken Diamond — most in program history.

In the outfield, McLain went a perfect 8-8 on defensive chances with one outfield assist.

Now holding the longest hitting streak on the team at 15 games in a row, McLain has earned multiple RBIs in nine of the last 11 games. He led the Sun Devils with eight this week.

After becoming the third member of his family to take home Pac-12 Player of the Week honors, as his brother Matt won it for UCLA in 2020 and Sean for ASU in 2022, Nick McLain now becomes the first of his brothers to win the award twice.
