Sommerhauser Leads Wildcats in Second Round of NCAA Regionals

May 14, 2024

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Racing against afternoon showers in the area, No. 11 Arizona Men's Golf shot 4-under par in its second round of the NCAA West Lafayette Regional and sits in third place at 9-under after the first two days. Senior Sam Sommerhauser shot a 3-under round of 69, which tied for the fifth lowest round of the day at Birck Boilermaker Gold Complex. Sommerhauser moved up three spots on the player leaderboard into a five-way tie for fifth place at 4-under.

"We were pretty steady through the front nine and then found our groove after the turn," said head coach Jim Anderson. "Our guys were fighting the elements a bit on our last three holes and didn't finish as strongly as we would have liked. However, shooting nearly the same score as yesterday is a sign of our team's focus and determination. We have put ourselves in a great position heading into Wednesday's final round, and I am excited to see us come out motivated and confident."

Arizona is firmly in third place by six shots over New Mexico and seven strokes ahead of fifth place Florida after 36 holes. Tournament leaders, Vanderbilt and Purdue, are seven and six shots ahead of the Wildcats, respectively.

The Cats had two other golfers break par in addition to Sommerhauser on Tuesday as Zach Pollo and Filip Jakubcik both carded 1-under rounds of 71. Jakubcik's effort in the second round vaulted him into the top 25 of the individual leaderboards. Tiger Christensen remained in the top 15 after Tuesday's round, sitting in a tie for 13th at 1-under.

Arizona will tee off on Wednesday morning at 5 a.m. (MST) alongside tournament leaders Vanderbilt and Purdue. The five lowest scoring teams from the regional will advance to the NCAA Championships later this month at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California.
