Pac-12 announces 2024 rowing annual awards & All-Conference honors

May 24, 2024

The Pac-12 Conference announced today the Pac-12 men’s and women’s rowing individual honors and All-Conference teams for the 2024 season, as voted upon by the Conference coaches.

Following their impressive three-peat victory in the Pac-12 Championship at Lake Natoma, the Stanford women's team swept the individual awards for the third straight year as well.  Luise Bachmann secured the Pac-12 Women's Rowing Athlete of the Year  while Derek Byrnes won Coach of the Year for the third straight season.  Freshman Matilda Drewett completed the Cardinal sweep by taking home the Pac-12 Women's Newcomer of the Year, the third straight year a Stanford rower has won the event.

Washington's men squad also kept the momentum going from their title at the Pac-12 Championship, winning two of the three annual awards.  Max Heid was named Pac-12 Men's  Rowing Athlete of the Year and Michael Callahan collected another Pac-12 Men's Rowing Coach of the Year.  The Pac-12 Men's Newcomer of the Year award went to Oregon State's Quinn Baker.

PAC-12 WOMEN’S ROWING ATHLETE OF THE YEAR: Luise Bachmann, Jr., Stanford (Ingelheim, Germany)

Stanford's Luise Bachmann made it three years in a row for the Cardinal earning this honor, following in the footsteps of former teammate Azja Czajkowski who took home the award the last two years.  Bachmann helped lead the Varsity Eight boat to win its race and clinch the 2024 Pac-12 Tournament.  The Varsity Eight has now won 3 straight  at the Pac-12 Championships and took first at the 2023 NCAA Championships to lead the Cardinal to a national title.  This the eighth time a Stanford rower has captured the award since it was created in 2008.

PAC-12 WOMEN’S ROWING NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR: Matilda Drewett, Fr., Stanford (Surrey, United Kingdom)

For the fifth straight season, Stanford takes home the Pac-12 Women's Rowing Newcomer of the Year thanks to an impressive debut by Matilda Drewett.  The United Kingdom native joined Bachmann on the Varsity Eight boat to bring home the Pac-12 Championship at Lake Natoma.  Drewett is the sixth Cardinal to be crowned Newcomer of the Year with their first coming back in 2003.

PAC-12 WOMEN’S ROWING COACH OF THE YEAR: Derek Byrnes, Stanford

In his eighth season on The Farm, Derek Byrnes continued to make history as the first Stanford head coach to be named Pac-12 Women's Rowing Coach of the Year three times, and three straight at that.  This comes off the strength of leading the Cardinal to three straight Pac-12 Championships.  Byrnes becomes the fifth coach in conference history to be honored in three straight seasons, joining Washington's Yasmin Farooq (2017-19), California's Dave O'Neill (2010-12), Washington's Jan Harville (2000-02 & 1992-94) and UCLA's Kelly Salonites (1989-1991).

PAC-12 MEN’S ROWING ATHLETE OF THE YEAR: Max Heid, Gr., Washington (Seattle, Wash.)

After helping lead Washington to the Pac-12 Championship, Max Heid became the first Husky to earn Pac-12 Men's Rowing Athlete of the Year since Ben Davison in 2019.  Leading the Varsity Eight boat, Heid and company pulled away from Cal to clinch their 41st conference championship.  The Seattle native becomes the fourth Husky to claim this honor since it was created in 2008.

PAC-12 MEN’S ROWING NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR: Quinn Baker, Fr., Oregon State (Olympia, Wash.)

For just the second time in conference history, the Pac-12 Men's Rowing Newcomer of the Year comes from Corvallis as Oregon State's Quinn Baker picks up the hardware.  He joins Jesse Maritz who won back in 2015.  Rowing on the Third Varsity Eight boat, the Beavers finished third in that race and third overall in the 2024 Pac-12 Championships.

PAC-12 MEN’S ROWING COACH OF THE YEAR: Michael Callahan, Washington

Extending his own conference record, Washington's Michael Callahan wins Pac-12 Coach of the Year for the 12th time and his first since 2021.  Since this award was created in 1978, the Huskies have dominated by taking it home 25 times.  Callahan and his predecessor at UW, Bob Ernst, are the only two coaches in conference history to win this award 10 or more times.  The Huskies just secured their 13th Pac-12 Championship in the last 17 years and 41st conference championship overall.

By claiming the Varsity 8 competitions at the 2024 Pac-12 Championships, the Stanford women and Washington men headline the 2024 Pac-12 Rowing All-Conference teams, which were also announced by the Conference office on Friday.

Members of the All-Conference rowing teams are based upon each institution’s finish in the Varsity 8 race at the Pac-12 Championships, which were held at Lake Natoma in Gold River, California. The Conference champion provides four members of the All-Conference team, the second-place crew provides three members, and the third-place finisher provides two. All other participating crews receive one selection each.
