Stanford, Arizona, USC and Arizona State advance to Pac-12 Men's Tennis Championship Semifinals

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - No. 1 STANFORD, No. 2 ARIZONA, No. 3 USC and No. 4 ARIZONA STATE all advanced to the semifinals of the 2021 Pac-12 Men’s Tennis Championship with quarterfinal victories at Barnes Tennis Center on Saturday. 

The Cardinal will meet the Sun Devils and the Trojans will face the Wildcats in Sunday’s semifinals at 3:00 p.m. PT. 

No. 1 STANFORD 4 vs. No. 8 WASHINGTON 0

The No. 1 seed for the tournament and the regular-season Pac-12 champion, the Stanford men were off to a powerful start as they fended off the Washington Huskies with a 4-0 victory. The Cardinal claimed their first point of the match in a dominating doubles performance by Arthur Fery and Alexandre Rotsaert, who picked up a 6-2 win, followed by teammates Traistan Boyer and Timothy Sah recording a 6-3 victory.  In singles play, Boyer defeated Han-Chih Lin, 6-2, 6-1 to kick off the singles and put Stanford up 2-0, followed by victories by Axel Geller over Clement Chidekh 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot and the clincher by Neel Rajesh over Jack Pulliam 6-3, 6-3 to send Stanford to tomorrow’s semifinals.

No. 2 ARIZONA 4 vs. No. 7 UTAH 0

No. 2 Arizona swept No. 7 seed Utah to earn a ticket to tomorrow’s semifinals against No. 3 seed USC.  Doubles wins by the teams of Jonas Ziverts/Carlos Hassey and Nick Lagaev/Gustaf Strom gave the Wildcats the doubles point to kick off the proceedings.  In singles play Filip Malbasic defeated Slava Shainyan 6-1, 6-3 at the No 3 spot to extend the lead to 2-0.  Victories by Gustaf Strom over Franco Capalbo (6-2, 6-3) and Herman Hoeyeraal over Mathias Gavelin, (6-4, 7-6) clinched the win despite a valiant effort by the Utes.

No. 3 USC 4 vs. No. 6 OREGON 1

No. 3 seed USC battled past No. 6 seed Oregon to book a semifinal spot against Arizona at the Pac-12 Men’s Tennis Championships.  USC took the doubles point off the back of victories by the Trojan duos of Daniel Cukierman/Riley Smith and Stefan Dostanic/Bradley Frye.  In the singles competition, Lodewijk Weststrate defeated Brandon Lam 6-3, 6-1 and Stefan Dostanic beat Quinn Vandecasteele 6-4, 6-3 to put the Trojans up 3-0 before Oregon’s Klov-Nilsson defeated Bradley Frye 6-3, 6-2 to put the Ducks on the scoreboard.  A victory at the No. 1 singles spot by Daniel Cukierman over Emmanuel Coste 6-3, 6-1 sent USC to tomorrow’s semifinals.

No. 5 ARIZONA STATE 4 vs. No. 4 UCLA 3

No. 5 seed Arizona State scored a thrilling victory over No. 4 UCLA 4-3 to earn a spot in the Pac-12 Men’s Tennis Championships semifinals against No. 1 Stanford.  ASU took a 1-0 lead over the Bruins into singles play following wins by ASU’s Ruehl/Rakotomalala and Lerby/Stoupe in doubles.  Tim Ruehl’s 6-3, 6-2 win over Ben Goldberg put the Sun Devils up 2-0, but UCLA battled back to tie the contest at 2-2 thanks to wins by Sam Feit and Roscoe Bellamy.   The see-saw contest came down to the last match with Nathan Ponwith defeating UCLA’s Govind Nanda in 7-5, 2-6, 6,-4 to clinch the tie.
