Road Warriors Score Five Goals in Sweep of RIT

Jan 15, 2022

ROCHESTER, NY – The Arizona State men's ice hockey team completed its 12-day road trip with three straight wins and its first road sweep of the season over the Rochester Institute of Technology. Josh Doan and Colin Theisen finished the 5-1 win over the Tigers on Saturday night with three points each as five different skaters helped light the lamp.

ASU (15-12-0) is on a tear against RIT (10-9-2) and boasts a 6-0 all-time record against the Tigers.

Josh Doan tallied his second three point night in the last three games and boasts eight points in the last four games. He easily outpaces all freshmen in scoring with 29 points on the season and ranks sixth in scoring amongst all skaters.

Colin Theisen enjoyed another three point night as well - his third of the season. The graduate forward scored a goal and notched two assists to improve his total points to 32 this year. That mark stands third amongst all NCAA skaters.

Matthew Kopperud got back to his power play scoring ways - collecting his ninth of the season to open scoring for the Sun Devils. That mark stands second in the NCAA - just one shy of the lead that is currently held at 10.

ASU scored all five goals unanswered and had a 5-0 lead deep into the third period. A small miscommunication led to a breakdown of the power play squad and opened up an opportunity for the Tigers to score a shorthanded goal to prevent a shutout.

The night was punctuated with an appearance by Bronson Moore in net - his first time in an NCAA game this season. Ben Kraws made his fourth consecutive start between the pipes and with the 5-1 lead with four minutes remaining, he was replaced by Moore.

The Sun Devils have scored five or more goals nine times this season. ASU's 95 goals on the season is second-most in college hockey, trailing No. 1 Minnesota State with 99.

GOAL SUMMARY
First Period
9:15 - ASU (1-0): Matthew Kopperud scored his ninth power play goal of the season - becoming the sole second place holder in the NCAA for most PPG this season.
Second Period
0:56 - ASU (2-0): Colin Theisen and Josh Doan brought the puck into the zone where Doan handed it off to Theisen. The graduate forward siked out the Tiger netminder and passed it back to Doan with the goalie too far out of position to prevent Doan's sneak attack.
5:46 - ASU (3-0): Colin Theisen scored a seemingly impossible goal from the far corner that hit the back of the goaltenders skate for his 16th goal of the season.
9:45 - ASU (4-0): Sean Dhooghe tossed a dime into the offensive zone which was controlled by Jack Jensen who then back passed to Tim Lovell high in the slot. Willie Knierim took a shot off a pass from Lovell but it was blocked by a Tiger skater. Jensen got the rebound off the Tiger skate and nailed the puck in for an ASU goal.
11:22 - ASU (5-0): Benji Eckerle absolutely battled for the puck along the boards and eventually opened up play with a handoff to Tim Theocharidis who took a shot on net. Eckerle swooped in on the rebound and nailed ASU's fifth and final goal.
Third Period
4:21 - RIT (5-1): A small miscommunication led to a breakdown of the power play squad and opened up an opportunity for the Tigers to score a shorthanded goal to prevent a shutout.
