Colorado Dominates Competition in Home Meet

Apr 9, 2005

BOULDER - The University of Colorado track and field team finished off its second home meet with multiple first place finishes Saturday at Potts Field. The men's and women's teams faired well in the non-scoring meet against teams from around Colorado and Wyoming. Competing the Invitational were athletes from Adams State College, Western State College, Colorado State University, Regis University, Colorado School of Mines, University of Northern Colorado, and the University of Wyoming.

The Buffs finished off the day with many regional qualifying marks across the board including Anna Magle (5-9.25) in the high jump, Carly Newlands (47-1.50) in the shot put and Eric Lee-O'Brien in the 100-meter dash.

The women had a great performing day proving too difficult to beat. In the 3000-m run Kalin Toedebusch won the event and Kendall Grgas-Wheeler took second with times of 10:28.70 and 10:32.99, following close behind were Kristen Hoogheem (11:06.40) in fourth and Erin Marston (11:06.40) in sixth. With regional qualifying times of 10:32.58 and 10:49.37 Renee Metivier and Natalie Florence also won first and second in the 3000-m steeplechase. Christine Bolf competed in and dominated the 800-m run with a second place finish of 2:16.00.

On the field the women proved to be just as strong by winning the long jump with Amberly Casey (19-6.25), triple jump with Liza Negriff (40-11.50), and shot put with Carly Newlands (47-1.50). Coming up close behind with second place finishes in the discus, javelin and pole vault were Newlands, Hannah Warfield-Ruffato and Megan Baker. Just shy of first place behind University of Wyoming's Lauri Smith was Megan Baker jumping 10-6 in women's pole vault.

The men's team bested their season with an unprecedented finish of nine out of 19 first place finishes. These included George Pincock in the 200-m and 400-m sprints with times of 21.52 and 48.12. Stephen Pifer (1:58.87) in the 800-m, James Strang (3:57.30) in the 1500-m, Bret Schoolmeester (8:23.19) in the 3000-m, Pete Janson (9:15.07) in the 3000-m steeplechase, and two first place finishes in both the 4X100 and 4X400 meter relays. Strong follow-up finishes included Eric Lee-O'Brien (22.12) with a fourth place finish in the 200-m, Chris Abuan (48.67) taking second in the 400-m and Jason Zichterman taking second in the 800-m with a time of 1:51.90.

The men also faired well in their field events. Coming in second and third in the men's hammer throw were Chase Mullen (189-7) and Zach Hazen (188-6), both with regional qualifying marks. Taking third place in pole vault was Blake Vanier with a jump of 15-0 amidst gusting winds that proved challenging for the competitors.

The Buffs return to the track with a great outlook on the season, on April 15 in California for the Mt. SAC Relays.
