Five Earn Top Honors For Buffs At Air Force Invite

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. -- The University of Colorado track & field team earned five first-place finishes and qualified 10 for the 200, 400, and 800-Meter dash finals on the first day of the Air Force Invitational at the Cadet Fieldhouse on Friday, Feb. 2.

 

Anthony Chiulli took top honors in the 800-meter run. He came in at 1:56.13. Daniel Kenney took fourth (1:58.24), Ben Ryan was sixth (1:58.84) and Wil Buchanan finished eighth (1:59.51). All four qualified for the finals as the top nine advanced.

 

In the sprints, the top 12 racers qualified for the finals on Saturday. The top six will race in the championship round and the seventh through 12th-place finishers will compete in the consolation round.

 

Jeremy Dodson took first in the qualifying rounds of the 200. His mark of 21.42 tied the second best time in school history, set twice by Jonathan Prather on Feb. 13, 1999 and Jan. 29, 2000, both at the USAFA. The CU record is 21.34, set by Erik Mitchell on Feb. 27, 1993.

 

Ryan Campbell and George Pincock also qualified in the 200. Campbell took third overall in 21.58 and Pincock placed seventh with a time of 22.08. Chelsea Haverty qualified for the women's 200, recording a personal record of 24.34.

 

Nate Terry and Veronica Maul each qualified in the 400. Terry took fourth overall with a time of 49.27. Maul earned an eighth-place finish, coming in at 59.37.    

 

Zach Hazen took fourth overall in the weight throw. He recorded a toss of 61-07.00, just short of his personal best and school record mark of 61-07.75.

 

Colorado swept the mile in the unseeded division. Dan Edwards won the men's race in 4:41.48. Anna Chase was first for the women in 5:55.25. Stephanie Ward took second, just over two seconds behind Chase (2:57.71).

 

The Buffs also took top honors in the unseeded 3,000-meters. Erin Marston led the pack the entire way, finishing at 10:52.02. Hilary McClendon completed the one-two-punch, finishing just behind Marston at 11:19.24. Greg Castro took second on the men's side in 9:38.83.

 

The Buffs resume action Saturday, Feb. 3. Colorado's first event with be the women's weight throw at 9 a.m. The first track event is the women's 5k, scheduled for 10 a.m.
