Buffs Set for USA Combined Events Championships

Mar 2, 2012

BOULDER - For the first time in University of Colorado history, a pair of student-athletes will compete at the USA Track & Field Indoor Combined Events Championships.

Senior Adam Salzmann and junior Brianne Beemer will compete March 3-4. Indiana University will host the event at Harry Gladstein Field House in Bloomington, Ind.

Beemer is fresh off a third-place finish in the pentathlon at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Track & Field Championships. She recorded a personal best score of 3,771 points at the meet, including a first-place finish in the final event, the 800-meter run (2:15.04). Beemer won her first pentathlon of the 2012 season, the Potts Invite, with a score of 3,769. This is her second trip to the national championships as she placed eighth in the pentathlon in 2011.

Salzmann, who competed unattached during the indoor season as he didn't have any indoor collegiate eligibility remaining, won a pair of heptathlons this season. He won the Potts Invitational with a Balch Fieldhouse record of 5,132 points and took first at the Iowa State Classic with 5,238 points.

Volunteer assistant coach Emily Pearson will also compete at the meet.  She won the ISU Classic with 3,905 points.

"It is an incredible honor to compete at the USA Championships and for the first time in school history we will have both a male and female competing for CU," assistant coach Lindsey Malone said. "Bri and Adam are outstanding students, terrific athletes and tremendous ambassadors for the University of Colorado. This is an incredible opportunity to compete with the best in the nation and I couldn't be more proud of them. We also have CU volunteer assistant coach, Emily Pearson, competing in the pentathlon as well, so CU will have a great representation at the national championship."

The pentathlon will be contested on March 4, while the heptathlon will take place March 3-4. Results will be posted at usatf.org.
